as a kid it always confused me - because it was called the phil silvers
show.
so i expected a guy called phil silvers to be doing different things - short
skits, longer bits, a bit of singing maybe - and yet every week it was the
same - a drama.
my little mind couldnt understand it.
and i also was convinced he was copying top cat - even though he came first.

I presume he was a big star in the US before Bilko so could demand that
billing. Although unheard of in the UK - to me at least. Perhaps it even
developed out of earlier series which were more as you thought, where
Bilko was merely a sketch.

The story is that Phil Silvers in the end became a recluse watching endless
recordings of Bilko until his death

Seems Hollywood is the loneliest place on earth ;-(

IMO the sequel series, "Softly, Softly" would have been an even better
choice.
