Have you read Charlie Chaplin's autobiography, or did you ever see a
folk duo called Cosmotheka? Both those sources describe Music Hall as
being riotously rowdy, full of barracking, etc. Cosmotheka used to
make a joke about having dead cats thrown at the performers: "It's not
so much that they threw a dead cat, it's more that they thought to
bring one in - they were obviously determined not to like SOMEBODY!"

As I recall it, Billy Cotton was nothing like that.

About a year ago the CEO of Eutelsat was interviewed on some Italian
satellite TV channel or other. Describing future developments he said
they were working towards being able to so tightly focus a transponder

Spot beams are quite popular in the Americas. They could probably do it but
would have to allow for overlapping.. Liverpool and Manchester would be on
different ranges, but Liverpool and Sheffield could share the same raange..
Doesnt really matter anyhow, I dont care to pay an extra £45 a year to the
BBC just so they can fund local crackheads. God knows the BBC funds too
much of that crap now anyhow.

But to return to the point about commercial broadcasting. I think
part of the problem is that the BBC is now so dumbed down, that it and
ITV are now competing for the same audience. My recollection is that
this didn't use to be the case. Allowing that with all such sweeping
generalisations there will always be notable exceptions, most families

I don't recall hearing the term in this context until later,

now in tabloid format, suggesting that their content also may be
dumbed down in a similar manner to broadcast content.

Even the flagship 'intellectual', 'arty', call them what you will,
channels have an awful lot of crap which really has no right to be
there at all - for example, 'The Avengers'! Hell! All my
acquaintances thought it crap the first time round, let alone repeated
30-40 years of increasing sophistication later!


When the population is largely becoming unable to read, write, spell or
think, and have what appears to be a mental age of eight, any programmes
without lots of stupid sounds, gaudy flashing coloured lights, and
celebs, is likely to be ignored anyway.

In an unregulated Capitalist society, people have one purpose, buying
stuff.

Keep 'em dumb, to the shops they'll come.

I have spotted this move over the last 7-8 years, the BBC has moved into
*celeb* mode. The news arm has turned into the jovial acts that we see on
SkyNews where they just like to giggle and play with someones hair during
those 3 seconds between news spots.
They say they try to market to "everyone" but really they just market the
same crap on multiple stations.

At least there's no commercials (but there is the odd bit of kit that's
displayed to us on a show that we arent supposed to really know is being
marketed to us)..

It was not a very good show, and now we think of it as being even
worse because of the implicit racism, but by the standards of the
times it wasn't that bad, about on a par with Billy Cotton, I'd say.

I never thought of the black faces as being racist - just part of the
highly stylised presentation of the show, along with the fancy dress and
the exaggerated enactments of little scenes. This sort of "style" is in
the eye of the beholder - you either enjoy it or think it a bit silly,
according to your taste, but at least the singers could actually sing.

It was basically a sort of Light Programme music show on TV.

Not only did they play to the lowest common denominator - they also
reflected the cosy inward-looking England so fond of some on this group.
