PVR failure to keep on going!
 

The Michael Jackson Tribute on BBC2 overran somewhat, and the Beeb's EPG
failed to keep up. Consequentially my Humax 9200 managed to chop it
short, twice after restarting it. Known bug I believe.

So I'm going to get rid of it and get a decent one. Now, who's PVR
actually managed to stay with the programme? Or was it too great a
transmission fault for any to cope?

Sounds great, can they guarantee it'll feck up every program on M J?
If so i'll buy one.

The BBC 2 EPG was a complete shambles on both Freeview and Freesat, as was BBC
HD's EPG on Freesat. However C5 also showed the programme, and their EPG data
was in less of a mess.

You need the PVR equivalence of clairvoyance. It's only doing what it's
told, as opposed to what you want it to do - my damned computer does the
same thing ;-).

The problem is the EPG and the way the TV companies implement it allied with
a poorly written and implemented specification. I'm told that Sonys are
better at not missing the start and end of a program which begs the question
"why the hell haven't Humax just accepted that being spec-compliant is not
acceptable if the specs are simply badly written"?

Hi Richard - I think my next DTT PVR will have to be both DVBT-2 & HD
capable so its probably worth living with the old one until reasonable one
of these is available.

The EPG thing happened on the Wimbledon overruns also. I wonder what's
changed?

I fancy going for a HD DSAT PVR next, Mark Carver reckons Sony's do DTT
right so hopefully they'll bring one out soon.

I've been trying to explain to some non technical friends why they have
to be careful when buying these very expensive "automatic Videos". I
have said that I hear Sony's and Tvonics do it well....

I think the general public are going to get very cross when more of
the UK goes DSO.

I watched a bit of it, what struck me is how good standards conversion is
these days. It would have been 1080/60i downconverted to 576/50i on BBC 2 and
C5, and 1080/50i on BBC HD. I didn't notice any extra motion artefacts that I
don't already see with native '50Hz' stuff on my LCD screen :-)

local U3A. It mainly involves helping elderly ladies get to grips with their
digital cameras :)

I didn't go near any of the Micheal Jackson stuff but we did watch the
Wimbeldon match where then closed the roof that seriuosly over-ran and
messed up the schedules. I just assumed that it all changed too fast for the
EPG unit to keep up.

We have had Freesat sinse it launched and upgraded to an HDR when they
became available last November. It has locked up a couple of times and I
think these were red-button app releated. It was slightly assumsing,
watching Wimbeldon in HD, to see captions pop-up saying the news, Panorama
and on sunday even Antiques Road Show, had moved to BBC2. I can't really
comment on how accruate the EPG is on the HDR as I don't use it very much
but have had no problems with the few things I have set-up to record.

We can see the DTT test service from CP which I thought was for testing
DVBT-2 and HD but is often SD. It is fun to see the windmills test tape
again.

I'm waiting to see if they managed to come up with a working solution for
Caldbeck. When I left there were worries that a 9 mux network might overload
the SI storage on many STBs.
