PVR that can join my PC network
I think it is time to get a PVR however I would like one that can join my
home network, preferably wirelessly. I want to be able to program it from my PC, stream and back up the recordings to my PC. I don't want to use an actual PC as I want to avoid endless configuring etc. I have never had a PC where the power management was reliable enough. Does such a machine exist and has anyone any experience with it? Thanks |

Does such a machine exist and has anyone any experience with it? Sort of... I use a Topfield PVR and have it connected to a Linksys NSLU2 NAS device running modified firmware. This makes toppy visible on the network as an FTP server. Basically you can read and write all areas of the topfield disk from the network (including schedules etc). You can make it wireless with a WAP on the network if you want (alternatively use a wireless NAS like the ASUS WL500G). Personally I currently access it via a homeplug network over mains link. Transfer rates are a bit limited. In turbo mode (which disables the user interface of toppy while a transfer is taking place) you can manage about 1.5 Mbyte/sec. However if you copy files with something like Filezilla, and play them with VCL Media player, then you can start watching a program immediately, while it is still downloading. Even if you download at the non turbo speed of about 700K/sec its still faster than real time, so you can do the same chase play trick. -- Cheers, John. /================================================== ===============\ | Internode Ltd - http://www.internode.co.uk | |-----------------------------------------------------------------| | John Rumm - john(at)internode(dot)co(dot)uk | \================================================= ================/ |
PVR that can join my PC network
Other than the Topfield plus hacked add-on (see other post) this remains a
Holy Grail for PVR users. I suspect part of the problem is that to do this, the PVR will need more than the "only just enough oomph" that they currently have - and that means an extra couple of quid in price. Paul DS. |

Mmm If my Freecom Media Player-35 can do it why not the Topfield? |

What i meant was if I can use my Freecom to store via my network, view via my tv, stream from my pc to a hard disk surely it's not beyond the whit of man to strap a couple of tuners to it to allow you to record directly to it and then share it. I've got my media player a Humax Freeview + box and the twpp are just crying out to be introduced formally rather than just being plugged into the same TV. Neither of them have much in the way of oomph and either should be able to do the work of the other. |

Because it doesn't record. Recording is the hard bit: you have to work with all the different formats that each country uses. Or restrict yourmarket to just one company which makes your product less profitable. I suspect that any manufacturer which tries to produce such a device will run into licensing problems and objections from broadcasters. Youhave no idea how much legal trouble there is even about existing PVRs. Simon. -- I'm using an evaluation license of nemo since 189 days. You should really try it! http://www.malcom-mac.com/nemo |

I think it is time to get a PVR however I would like one that can join my home network, preferably wirelessly. A Dreambox (tm) with appropriate tuners viz DVB-s and/or DVB-t?
