Can anyone recommend a Freeview+ (decoder+recorder) unit? I was in Sainsbury's earlier & even they seemed to have a choice of 10 - I find it all a bit boggling. What noone else has mentioned is that Freeview+ is a standard that not all PVRs comply with. There are many digital receiver/recorders but most do not comply with Freeview+ at the moment. I've no idea about Sainburys line up. Things like series record and some flexibility modes for dual tuner versions are controlled. Some units you cannot record 2 channels while playing back a recording. Apart from features, the main thing to watch out for is quality. Some units are very hot, have fans and dodgy hardware, many have dodgy software. If the software works initially, it may have problems later on due to broadcast changes. I'd advise sticking to a well known and supported brand, and preferably one that can upgrade without an OAD. Eg via RS232 or USB. -- Tony |

Humax PVR9150T: ~£135.00 Humax PVR9300T: ~£185.00 I wouldn't recommend as supermarket for something like that. Either get it direct from the manufacturer, or somewhere like Comet. In what way are Comet any better than a supermarket? S: Teenagers stock the shelves and dont give you some made up BS about an item trying to get you to buy it. C: Teenagers are the senior managment and they know that that box, the one your looking at, is the best, because it supports things like SCART, IR Remotes, and it's so damn good that they use 3 freeview+ PVR's in their home. When you compare that box to a 2nt box, you also find that they have 3 of those freeview+ PVR's in their home too! S: The price isnt great, but you can usually return the product for 1 year for cash back, or as long as they are selling it return it for another one!! C: Sorry sir, no returns for equipment that plugs into electricity outlets past 28 days, Consumer what?, No sir, What?, I dont think we are legally what?, Sir I just spoke to senior management, he's going to look it up on our internal webpage and see if we have to do it, but he's looking at his first pubic hair before he does that. Sir we have looked and we must refund you for it, but sir there's a restocking fee, a insurance fee, a take back fee, and a testing fee, and you must also provide 3 forms of ID, and you need to contact the TV lisencing people to tell them you no longer have a viewing box, and the total for everything you need to pay for us to take back the 299.99 unit is 384.46. Oh yes sir, after going to managment again it appears we cant charge you all of that, but you can only have your refund in vouchers (BTW, Trading standards states that they CANT force you to take vouchers, but DSG and Comet will). Sorry, I couldnt resist ;P... But Comet is better because they will usually pricematch+add some on AND they can sometimes get kit that supermarkets cant get. One word of warning to anyone however. DSG buy online and collect, cant be returned to the store, they will not process returns unless it's shipped back! |

If I know what I want and Comet have got it for a good price, i'll go and get it from there (same goes for Currys) Got my plasma TV from Comet just because they could price match. |
