screen setting no longer available
Hi
I have an LG TV (37LG60000) When I bought it I had a basic SKY box. One of the options for the TV in the "Picture" setup was "Original" - and although I hadn't completely familiarised myself, I think that setting would automatically set the display to whatever the viewed programme had been created for. However, within days of getting the TV I was lucky enough to win a SKY+ HD box (with a year's subscription to the total SKY package, including HD!!!!!) That was installed, and I love it - but for one thing. The option "Original" is now greyed out. So I have to keep setting the screen display manually. Is this normal - and if not, how do I get automatic display settings? Thanks __________ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 4193 (20090626) __________ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com |

That's correct about the cabling - but is it the norm to have to keep changing the picture size/ratio for different programmes? __________ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 4193 (20090626) __________ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com |

What I would expect is the for the whole frame to be displayed regardless of aspect ratio. What a lot of people expect however, is the entire screen to be filled with a picture even when the screen is 16:9 and the source is 4:3. Clearly this is impossible without cropping and/or stretching which I would find objectionable. -- Graham. %Profound_observation% |

Clearly this is impossible without cropping and/or stretching which I would find objectionable. On most decent TVs/systems most people wouldn't notice. The amount of cropping can be minimal and the amount of stretch can be disguised with non-linear stretch algorithms with the centre of the screen hardly showing any aspect ratio change. -- Alan news2009 {at} admac {dot} myzen {dot} co {dot} uk |

It's amazing how many people set up for a "fill the screen no matter what". Perhaps they like fat women. There's an odd setting on the LG TV I'm looking at now. The screen surround is black (thank goodness - what WAS it with those silver frames?). But when watching a 4:3 picture the default colour for the empty screen area was a quite off-putting light gray. I had to find a "hidden" menu to change them to black. |

The great thing about using scart was, if everything was set up
correctly and with decent makes of TV etc, that the aspect ratio switched automatically depending on the programme being transmitted. The major problem is that very few people ever set the system up to work correctly. True, most of our customers are older but this is no real relevance as the younger ones often rush at the installation like bulls at gates and dont spend any time with the finer points, it seems. We never make a service call without checking all of the aspect ratio settings on each piece of equipment. Very few people have set up their DVD players to suit widescreen tv. Many people have not set up their SKY box to 16x9 since they updated the TV. (This week we went, for some other reason, to a very posh lady who was watching the tennis from the Sky box in 4x3 on her widescreen set and initially was very much against anything being touched as she was so adament that she did not want short fat people. The sky box had not been set to 16x9 of course, so the sides of the pic were being cropped and no amount of her fiddling with the aspect button on the tv had any useful effect. She just said that she wished she had not bought a widescreen tv! Once we demonstrated true widescreen she was very happy) Many people have no idea that if they set their TV up for auto switching, it will do its best to switch when told by the other equipment or the broadcaster. A number of the lesser channels on Sky run in full-time widescreen nomatter what the programme and a some run in "tall-thin" mode continuously. Just as we were making headway, and getting many of our regular customers sorted out and also managing to convince them that not everything is designed to fit the width of their TV.....HD and HDMI came along, with no auto switching, for the most part!! And, with the exception of a few combinations of equipment, no auto source switching! I couldn't believe it! For those who say that all HD programming is in widescreen, so it might be, but the same Sky box etc is used for viewing older 4x3 progs and there is no way that people are going to put up with having it connected both ways and switch to scart sometimes and HDMI at other times. As a matter of interest, one item that does cope with most of the aspect switching, if it is set up correctly, is the Humax Foxsat HD PVR Our other problem, as someone else said, is that some people will not be happy unless the programme fills the screen at all times, no matter what and they seem totally oblivious as to the shape of the picture. Personally I will not watch a distorted picture and no amount of "clever processing" can make a 4x3 programme watchable in anything other than 4x3. In short...I agree with "Wasted", HDMI is a backward step in some ways. The Sky box should handle the compression of 4x3 progs (like the Foxsat) and not rely on the TV.....which generally doesnt do it. |

I think the idea however is that the sky box SHOULD output the 4x3 with bars on the side (or if your using a 4x3 output) it should just insert it's own bars at the top and bottom for widescreen. The niggle I had for years was that some stations (and say hi to Virgin1) still switch from WS to 4:3 when playing adverts!.. I hate to see the source change in the middle of an advert, or right when the show is about to return. |

That's the TVs job to fill them in or not. All the Sky box can do is send the switching signal to tell the TV what mode it should be in, and then it's generally down to the viewer to decide how that should be dealt with. |

I know, what I am saying is that as the output of HDMI is something that's pushed full screen, the bars need to be added by the transmission box (Receiver), and not the display (TV).. |

Last week, I found that while watching Star Trek TNG on V1, the aspect ratio was changing every few seconds throughout the programme, the same night, it was happening on The Wire on BBC2. -- Ian |
