Cost of installing new tv aerial
Hi. A friend of mine has just moved into a new property but there appears to
be no tv signal whatsoever....there is the faceplate behind the tv but connecting that to the freeview box/tv via a cable results in no signal. She says that the landlord says there is an aerial in the loft but since there is no signal whatsoever even with a booster attached i seriously doubt that. My question is how much is a new aerial likely to cost...just a guesstimate will do. I'm not sure if it will be cheaper for her to buy one of those "buy now watch forever" packages or Freesat than buy an aerial. Any opinions would be welcome and appreciated. |

Depends where she gets it from. I've just given away a Televes DAT75 and a smaller Freeview aerial on our local Freecycle group. -- Jeff Gaines Damerham Hampshire UK Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his friends for his life. If a flat, do the other tenants have a problem? If a house then just have a look in the loft and check the aerial and cable (and power to any amplifer). If the landlord has only supplied a loft aerial he/she may not take kindly to having a proper aerial fitted outside or even the freesat dish aerial... -- Geo |

It is possible that the loft aerial has an amplifier attached and the previous occupant has taken away the power unit which plugs into the aerial socket. This is not an uncommon problem. Someone would need to take a look at what ever is in the loft and find out the make of the amplifier to know which power unit to buy. An alternative is that mice or squirrels have knawed through the cable. -- From KT24 - in "Leafy Surrey" Using a RISC OS computer running v5.11 |

The DAT75 was excellent but enormous! -- Jeff Gaines Damerham Hampshire UK I can please only one person per day. Today is not your day. Tomorrow, isn't looking good either. |

The old biddy that we bought this place from removed everything that she could. Even hacked through cables (TV and fibre) level with the wall. Refused to give us the codes for the alarm system as she's been told not to tell anyone! Taking away the PSU sounds likely, as you say. Al. |

If you suspect that there is an amplifier that needs line- power, test the aerial point with a multi-meter, outer to inner on the diode test range. Now reverse the probes. If the readings are significantly different, you can be sure there is an Si junction at the end rather than a lump of Al -- Graham. %Profound_observation% |

The coax was neatly coiled up in the box behind the plate but not connected and in the attic there were 4 coax tails coming from various rooms but no aerial or dis' amp, although a power socket had been fitted for one. Could be worth you having a look. Also as others have said is there an amp on the aerial? Again could be worth a look -- Bill |

There is no signal whatsoever according to the signal meter on her freeview box. I suspect that the plate is not connected to anything. The landlord claims that the aerial is in the loft so she will try and have a look up there. Anyway she is looking down the SkyTV route now so it will hopefully be installed in a week or so. |
