No, it failed because of the Demopublican Repubicrats. They've
controlled Congress and the Presidency for at least 100 years. You
can't say that about any other party, especially not Republicans
(a.k.a. The Right Horn of Satan) and Democrats (a.k.a. The Left
Horn of Satan) separately.

The prices of the converter boxes are inflated by the coupon. If Government
just stuck with the original date of Feb 17th, the prices of all converter
boxes would have dropped to a realistic price of $10-$20.

Same thing goes for Solar Energy, the prices of a setup is inflated by the
rebates and incentives. The realistic price for a $5k (1Kwh) is really about
$1500.

LG pretty much set the price. In March 2007, Thomson (RCA) announced a
coupon-eligible converter box that they priced at $200. A few months
later, when LG announced they would be selling theirs (Zenith/Insignia)
for $60, Thomson followed suit. Had LG said $40, I'll bet Thomson would
have, too.

Absolutely. They both had a hand in it.

I wanted to try converting to digital a year before I was able to, but
there were none of the government-promised $40 converters anywhere in
the stores or on-line. I read somewhere on the web that the retailers
didn't want to see any converters until the government started issuing
coupons, and I read other places that the government was waiting to
issue coupons until the converters were in the stores. Personally, I
think they were trying to sell as many high-profit HDTVs as they could
before people learned that a converted analog TV was perfectly acceptable.

Another case of the government mucking around with the marketplace, and
making things worse. Both sides are at fault. The idiots in power now
for insisting on a coupon program, and the idiots in power then for
giving in and then underfunding it. Had the marketplace been left alone,
a need for an inexpensive converter would have been seen, and somebody
would have filled it. But no. We po' folks had to be "protected" from
the evil electronics industry and our own folly.

Sigh.

I have a different view. The program worked for enthusiasts who largely did
not need it and failed because the people that really need the converters
were not well informed nor interested in what was going on at the time the
program started. I think the whole idea of subsidizing any but those who
are on very limited incomes was silly to start with, and probably not even
necessary for them.

I mean really, Wes, was it a big financial burden to you and most of the
people posting here that got coupons? The digital transition was just too
much for your budget to deal with?

It was absolutely no burden on me. That's why I bought 2 and then gave
them to someone it would have been a burden on. The 2 only cost about $20
with the coupons.

The problem, of course, is that many of those who got the first round of
coupons did not need the help. I am sure that most were not giving them to
the needy. Simply a foolish program.

TV is not a right, nor even a necessity. It is a luxury.

More US households (98.9%) have TV than have indoor toilets, so it's pretty
obvious that even poor people can find the money for TV.

He thinks the Democrats will keep pushing the date back until somebody
comes up with a way to make the digital signal "more robust" (his words,
not mine) so that everybody in the country can receive it with rabbit
ear antennas - or that they will dump the whole thing.

But in that post he was talking specifically about the coupon program.
In his mind, the Democrats "fixed" that. They did it in the usual manner
of politicians - they threw more money at it. It is, after all, the only
"solution" politicians of any party know.

Tell me again why the taxpayers are responsible for buying you a TV
converter?
TV is not a right, nor even a necessity. It is a luxury.

More US households (98.9%) have TV than have indoor toilets, so it's pretty
obvious that even poor people can find the money for TV.

Because the Government is making BILLIONS off the PUBLIC airwaves.

And causing the obsolescence of millions of perfectly good
televisions.

If tomorrow the Government suddenly did something that made your car
obsolete and unable to run, would you want them to cover the cost of a
replacement?

And those (like YOU) who blame one party or one group for all this
country's problems are dumber than dog****.

TMT, you are a "throwback" to the 60s where some people hated people for
what they were (for example, what color, what religion). You are
nothing but a modern day version of a bigot!

Thankfully, the president is a LOT smarter than you and knows that
working together is the ONLY way that we are going to solve our
problems. Why can't YOU see that?

From all parties holding office.

THE person who talks unwisely about others may commit the greater sin, but
the one who talks unwisely about himself makes the greater fool of himself.
The gift of tongue holds no greater temptation than that of slyly glorifying
one's self, and no surer way of achieving contempt. Few are able to evade
this temptation altogether; for many it is the besetting fault of their
talk.

No, it failed because of the Demopublican Repubicrats. *They've
controlled Congress and the Presidency for at least 100 years. *You
can't say that about any other party, especially not Republicans
(a.k.a. The Right Horn of Satan) and Democrats (a.k.a. The Left
Horn of Satan) separately.

Yeah, you just keep telling yourself that. Delusions like that help
you get through the day, I'm sure.

Just compare the way things were when Clinton left office and the way
things were when Bush left office and the lesson should be clear.

While you're at it, don't forget to compare how things were when
Carter left office and when Johnson left office.

When are you guys gonna figure out that the party isn't what makes the
difference?

TJ

When they grow up.

And sadly, some people never grow up. *Worst yet they pass on their
hates and prejudices to their kids. *I know a "TMT like" person who
tells his kids that he doesn't care what they become when they grow up
"as long as it isn't a republican".

To me, it is VERY sad that some people (more than a lot of us think)
STILL judge people by their color, religious beliefs, party affiliation
and many other silly things. *:(

If that's true, the government should have a converter coupon program

A lot of us are not willing to "work together" with people whose goal
is government control control and oversight over virtually all aspects
of our lives, no matter which party they happen to belong to.

But a lot more of us know if Bush hadn't totally left the country in the crapper, then
there would have been no need to hand it over to the democrats. So if the current
administration is screwing up so badly, think for a moment how bad it must have gotten for
the people of this country to switch to something this bad and then thank Bush for mucking
it up for you.

Huh. The government hasn't caused any of my televisions to become
obsolete and unable to run. They run just fine. Just as good as they did
a year ago. Two years ago. In fact, all of my televisions work BETTER
than they did two years ago, with the same indoor antennas I used
before. No more snow. No more ghosts. No more changing the antenna
position for each station. No more trying in vain when the wind blows to
get any kind of watchable picture on the FOX and MyNetwork stations. No
more wishing I could watch the one CW program I like, because now I can
watch it, perfectly.

Thank you, US Government. Had you not mandated the change to digital, it
would have taken me a lot longer to see the light. I would have spent
years thinking my analog stuff was working "just fine."

Nope. They did that to me once already. A while back all the lead was
removed from gasoline. We had one old engine that wouldn't run right on
unleaded fuel, so we bought some "lead substitute" that was sold for
that purpose. It came in pint containers, and you mixed one of them with
a tank of gasoline. We used it for a while, but eventually it just
wasn't worth it any more, and we got rid of that vehicle. Replaced it
with a better one - no government money involved. None wanted.
