Buyer Bewa Geek Squad's Half-Baked HDTV & Home Theater Hook-Up
By Chris Boylan
As the editor of a home theater publication, I'm often asked for advice from my friends, not only on what HDTV, Blu-ray player and speakers to buy, but also how to connect it all together for the best picture and sound. A couple of years ago, this prompted me to write a three part article on "how to hook up that fancy new HDTV." To this day, these articles remain some of the most popular pages on the site. But many people don't want to become educated on the finer points of HDTV resolutions, aspect ratios and surround sound technology just to hook up a few wires. Instead, they will call in an expert to set everything up for them. And that's just what my friend Diane thought she was doing by calling in the Geek Squad, the installation and services arm of Best Buy. I asked her how she was enjoying her newly installed HDTV and HD cable set-top box and what I heard (and later verified first-hand via a social visit) was a tale of woe that could only be described as incompetence at its finest. http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/Ne..._Squad.s html -- Certified SPAM-free sig |

That is sad. I've read elsewhere that GS service can be iffy, though I have no personal experience - I'd like to believe this was an exception. But again, I'm wondering if BB has any qualification testing to know if a prospective hire has the skills for this work. It would be a simple matter of providing a futzed up system in the shop for screening applicants. -- jer email reply - I am not a 'ten' |

Now these guys are supposed to be the 'big boys' and _they_ goofed it up. I offered to tune it to KCBS-DT instead but was told they were only allowed to watch KCBS. Go figure. G² |

I was really pleased with Amazon's (free) delivery. I was in a hurry to go somewhere so I asked them to just leave it in the living room in the box. but they said they should really take it out and hook it up to make sure it's okay. So I agreed, then he spun the box around and said, "Besides, there's this big gash in the carton". Holy cow, a warehouse wingnut drove a fork lift into it! So they pulled the box top off and we carefully examined the back panel, no visible damage or scratches. Hooked it up, perfect picture. Not to mention I ordered it around 11:00 AM and it arrived the next afternoon. (shipped from their warehouse in Hazelton, PA...not too far from my northwest Jersey location but routed to Elizabeth [on the shore] first. |
