I know that YeSTERDAY was UKTV History, but why the lower case 'e'? It's written Yesterday on my Sony STB. Stupid name for a stupid channel which has totally degenerated from when it used to show history documentaries. And for how much longer will QUEST (ie Discovery) be coming soon? Another stupid name. I wonder whether they'll continue to show *natural* history programmes as they (usually) aren't about 'yesterday' and their station name no longer has 'history' in it. I expect they will, and all the period dramas like Poldark which don't (AFAICR) feature historical events or characters. And for how much longer will QUEST (ie Discovery) be coming soon? It gives the start date on the screen, 14 May. You mean déja vu. And yes, it is. Quite a clever one i thought, déja vu meaning, quite literally, already seen, so if you saw Top Gear on BBC2, or then on BBC3, or then on Dave, you could quite reasonably have déja vu when you watch it on Dave ja vu. Except that the station name doesn't convey that it is Dave programmes plus one hour. -- Max Demian |

Many years ago when vcrs were still a novelty, YTV ran a some trailers that had the name of the day of the week rapidly zooming out of the screen. What fun we had trying to pause the tape at exactly the right moment half way through the saTURDay one. The BBC's 'Tonight' titles (the '70s late-night one, not the '60s Fyfe Robertson teatime one, or the unwatchable Trever Macdonut version) had something similar. The letters imploded inwards on themselves until only TIT was visible, usually followed by a shot of Austin Mitchell. Many years ago I was in the living room of an elderly lady and her female companion, demonstrating the operation of the new TV set. For some reason the teletext was faulty, and the screen filled with a very large jagged image that looked rather like a well-known four letter word. Bill |

When I was young I wondered why the internationally known pop-star who sang "The Locomotion" would name herself after a small place near Bolton ;-) Ahh, childhood misapprehensions. In infant assembly we sung 'There is a green hill far away.' The headmistress had the absurd name of Miss Greenhouse and I assumed we were singing a song that would somehow magically make her 'far away' -- which I saw as being a common good. Later we should have chanted "Hallowed be thy name . . " but since the Prime Minister was Harold MacMillan we always said "Harold be thy name . . ". It seemed reasonable to pray to such an important man. (Many years after this I was to work for Mr MacMillan's nephew, who told me amusing stories about him. In return I told him how we would pray to his uncle, which bemused him.) In the summer holidays following the second year of infant school I was apprehensive about the junior school. The boy next door, Tommy Scholey, was two years older and thus was a hardened inmate of the Juniors. He was also a bit of a joker. He and I walked down the road to look at the Junior school. "You see that place up there," said Tommy, pointing to the tank room, which looked like a shed on the flat roof, "That's the caning room." Seeing my look of alarm he continued gleefully, "That's where they cane you." I'd heard rumours that it was possible to get the cane in the juniors, so my fear was immense and uncontrollable. When the first day of term came my feet were leaden indeed. Bill |
