oddly spaced magenta/green roll bar with DirectTV

Perhaps someone can shed some light on what might be happening (and I
realize this might not be a DTV issue per se):

key gear:

SONY STR-DA4ES receiver
DTV HD20 HD DVR
AppleTV (ATV)
Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK 50² Plasma HD display monitor

I only have 3 inputs on the plasma: RGB - composite - HDMI

To use my newly acquired ATV I opted to run RGB from the HD20 into the
Sony "TV/SAT" RGB input, as well as take RGB from the ATV into the Sony
"DVD/LD" input.

The RGB output of the Sony rig goes to the RGB input of the HDTV.

And that is where the issue arises: I get this evenly spaced ghosting
magenta and green scrolling bars. This appears ONLY when watching
DirecTV and is NOT visible on any other video input. They are parallel
to each other but not immediately adjacent to each other. They are
about 1/3rd screen height apart from each other. Going RGB directly out
of the DTV HD20 into the plasma eliminates these bars but that doesn't
solve my ATV input situation. This phenomenon did not happen until I
set-up the aforementioned scenario.

The other option is to purchase an HDMI switcher and use that to go
between my PS3 that is presently using the HDMI input. My Sony AV
receiver does not handle HDMI.

Hopefully I have given someone out there enough details to make an
educated guess as to what might be causing this and can offer some
possible solutions.

Many thanks

It sounds like it may be 'hum bars' from a ground loop in your new
additions. Some things to try. Try a 'ground lifter' on the power cord
to the Apple box since it's the newest item. Those grey cubes for
converting a 3 wire plug to a 2 wire socket is what I'm talking about.
If it fixes your problem, it's _not_ the correct long term solution.
You may also be getting the hum through the antenna cable. A suitable
solution _does_ exist if that's the problem AND it's very inexpensive.
It's called a 'galvanic isolator' and simply connects between the coax
cable and its destination. I got mine from thses folks and they were
only $5 each.

Start with the ground lift and then disconnect things until it's good
again. When you find the culprit let us know and you'll get some
suggestions.
