"Black Sunday" on HDNet Movies, doesn't reach left and right sides of screen?

I recorded the 1977 movie Black Sunday off the HDNet Movies channel.

Its original aspect ratio was 2.35:1. But, for some reason, when the
channel aired it, the picture didn't quite reach the left and right
sides of our 16:9 HDTV.

The picture filled maybe 90% of the width of our screen -- much wider
than 4:3.

The aspect ratio of the film looked correct. If anything, the people
looked (just *maybe*) slightly too thin.

I don't think I've seen this before. Does anyone know what happened
with that particular film / transfer?

Even if the ratio was exactly correct, why didn't they make the
picture a little taller and wider?

The dog from that film you saw February 8th 09 10:09 PM

imdb.com says this was a 35mm film with anamorphic lenses at 2.35:1
aspect ratio. But there was a laser disk flavor at 1.33:1 with mono
audio, presumably panned and scammed.

Answer is someone screwed up.

The ratio on what I recorded was probably 2.35:1. However, that still
doesn't explain why it didn't reach the top, left, right, or bottom of
my screen.

I don't quite know what you mean by that. The original movie wasn't.
And the picture I saw wasn't cropped. It just didn't quite reach the
left and right sides.

Darn, I was hoping someone else here recorded it.

That's why I said someone screwed up - like leaving the image formatter
set for something other than 2.35:1. Someone's HUA relay was jammed.
(HUA = Head Up Ass)
