When (to that point) will we be able to but Freeview HD set top boxes?

First look at this November 2008 response
to an Ofcom consultation;
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/cond.../intellect.pdf
"Intellect advocates an approach that would see
access to T2 services being made available to the
largest possible populace at the earliest possible
opportunity."

And this link:
http://tech.ebu.ch/dvb-t2
"The first commercial DVB-T2 receivers are
expected to be available as early as
the middle of 2009" *

Will the first be your favourite band and model ?
Maybe not - but it seems the industry have
U-turned and now sees DVB-T2 and HD on the
large UK DTT market as an important market.
Note that DVB-T2 is not expected very early
in low-end TV sets or STB models.

If - as expected - the BBC will apply for pre-DSO
licenses for London and a few of the other large
transmitters, the DVB-T2 could cover between
6 and 10 million households before FIFA2010
in ZA.

Lars :)

* Personally, I will give it to late 2009.

My guess is that it will be when the DVB-T2 lisence holders are happy with
the payouts they'll receive!
Of course, The spec isnt finished yet so who knows ;P.

Hi Digie TV Techies

I am the proud owner a Panasonic TH-42PZ81B Full HD Plasma-TV with an
integrated built in freesat and freeview DVB tuner. It already gets both the
Freeview(SD only at present) & the HD transmissions from freesat really
well. I thought it would also get the HD from Freeview if and when that
starts up (with maybe a software update) or have I been misled ?

Regards Jimbo

Probably yes, HD transmissions on satellite are part of the quite old DVB-S
format, HD broadcasts on Freeview will be part of the brand new DVB-T2 format.
Existing SD broadcasts on Freeview are DVB-T1, which is not 'forwardly
compatible' with T2. T2 was only ratified in October 2008, I've not heard of
any receivers in the consumer markets yet.

You appear to have forgotten about the HD transmissions from satellite
in DVB-s2 format.

Surely the tuner in an HD set will be the same as that in any other
Freeview TV. It's the decoding of the digital signal that's different.

But I imagine that TVs use hardware decoders, in which case a firmware
update would not help.

I dont think any are done in S2 format, but If I recall correctly all
FreeSat receivers must be S2 compliant.

I would guess you have been misled.
The h.264 decoders are in the TV, but there's no receiver that can take in
the DVB-T2 signal. I guess it is possible that the system could be robust
enough to receive this type of signal, but I rekon it's doubtful. Try
sending Panny service an email and ask them.

There are 2 BBC HD feeds, odd that (a mirror of BBC HD).
I think that the talk said they would move to S2 but that it wouldnt
broadcast in S2 early on.. I dont know why they would do such a thing
because it means FreeSat mfgr's will just put in basic crappy S2 support and
when it's needed the boxes might not be up to par ;( ..

I did not say that BBC HD was in DVB-s2 format.

If you consult http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html, you will see
that some B$kyB services are in DVB-s2 MPEG-4 (HD).

If you look at Astra at 23,5 East you will see Canaal Digital and Kabel
Deutschland use DVB-s2, if you look at Astra 19,2 East, you will see
Premier and CanalSat France use DVB-s2, if you look at Astra 16 East you
will see DigitalAlb use DVB-s2 etc etc.

So as I stated your statement

"HD transmissions on satellite are part of the quite old
DVB-S format"

does apply to BBC and ITV HD transmissions but not to *all*

"HD transmissions on satellite"

The point is that there is on going transition from DVB-s to DVB-s2,
just as there will be from DVB-t to DVB-t2.

Probably yes,

100% YES, 100% no chips yet,
100% NO sw upgrade possible.
(only prototype DVB-T2 tuners exist)

Existing SD broadcasts on Freeview are DVB-T1, which is not 'forwardly
compatible' with T2. T2 was only ratified in October 2008,

DVB-T2 was approved by the DVB in June 2008.
DVB-T2 is currently undergoing the ETSI radification
process that will end April 2009.
There has been some clarifications in the text,
but no changes to the standard itself since the
DVB June 2008 BlueBook.

Chips are in development, but I find it very
unlike that any public announcement will
come before the standard are formally ratified.
Those that need the DVB-T2 chips surely have
all information under 'non-disclosure'.

FreesatHD receivers must be DVB-S2, To use
DVB-S2 all channels sharing a transponder must
use same standard DVB-S or DVB-S2.

Lars :)

The DVB-T2 standard can be downloaded from
dvb.org or ETSI.eu as EN 302 755

Well, I was meaning that perhaps the hardware is robust enough to handle
firmware that can allow the equipment to tune in T2.. But doubtful :P..
The BBC HD trials last year? in london were h.264 over dvb-t
