Sky Box funny message - about to go into stand by mode?
Does anyone know why my Sky box just came up with a message saying
that it is about to go into stand by and to press "back up" to cancel? Is this some sort of new power saving feature to save the planet? And if so how the heck did this feature get into my box? Is there a way to disable it? I don't think that turning your sky box off is going to save the planet, not that it needs saving from anything. It is also quite annoying because what happens if you've left it on to record something? E.g. the late night AFL playoff game? What are Sky thinking? {I have regular Sky not Sky+ or Sky HD} Thanks for the help, John |

Standard Sky boxes don't really have a standby mode, it's merely a "blank display" mode with a red light. There is very little difference in consumption, certainly not nearly enough difference to light all the homes in Birmingham as Sky claim. -- Graham. %Profound_observation% |

Maybe its a kind of annoyance placed there so you all go and get plus? The "feature" was added to Sky Plus boxes some time ago and only more recently to standard boxes. According to someones' research on one of the forums, there is a difference of around one watt between standby and on with the average standard Sky box. I haven't got round to measuring it yet. More with the Sky Plus, though. BTW, I am getting called out to an increasing number of items where the power supplies have failed or other problems have occurred due to the customers switching everything off at the mains overnight etc. Switch mode power supplies dont like starting up from cold as they get older and the more chances they are given to fail, the more they will! Does anyone remember the Pace analogue satellite boxes?! Perfectly ok untill mains switched off and on, then bang! Try explaining that to a customer who is saying "it was alright until you touched it"!! (I ended up explaining the possible outcome and getting the customer to pull the plug and replace it if it had to be done so it couldn't be my fault.) |

We always switch everything off, except the Humax, at the wall and sometimes without swiching off the TV first or puuting it into standby.Wrong? |

Last point first, doesn't really make any difference if things are
switched off or put in standby before powering off at the wall. I have had no noticable problems with LCD's etc being powered off and on except for plenty of failures of the seperate sealed switch mode power supplies which are supplied with the smaller LCD sets and monitors. I suspect this is because they are not ventilated and they run hot which causes degredation of capacitors and then breakdown if powered off and then started from cold. Generally my opinion is that if the item has an accessible mains off switch, then it is designed to be powered off, if not, then it probably isn't. I have never been keen on leaving CRT TV's on standby. It is perfectly possible for a set to decide to bcome out of standby on its own and some sets were even designed to do this under SCART control when a connected item was switched on (ie a VCR etc started up on its timer) or even with their own timer. EHT voltages are very high and EHT components are prone to insulation breakdown and possible fire. I have seen many burnt-out CRT TVs in 30 years of reparing and wouldn't ever trust one fully. I now have an LCD as my main set and, for the first time ever, I leave it on standby. It doesnt have a main switch and it has an exceptionally low consumption in standby and I am quite happy about this. A real point worth mentioning is that the majority of satellite receivers and freeview boxes and freeview TV's receive software updates over the air when the manufacturers book time on the transmitters (The new Humax PVR's have had them again this week incase they missed the previous update, for example, to quieten the fan etc) so if they are not left connected to the mains they will miss the upgrade. Humax boxes are set originally to look for new software around 4am, as I remember (although you can change this in the menus). |

This LCD has real problems switching back on again at the set. It has a 12v "transformer" in the mains lead whigh apparently transforms voltage to exactly 12v from 240 - don't understand why, but they say it does.Switch it back on at the wall (timeclock) and it can take several attempts to power back up again. Still a puzzle but we're living with it. |

most sets have a "sleep" function now so you can set them to switch to
standby after a certain time. Useful for a bedroom set. It does leave the power supply running (for better or for worse, depending how you look at it) but it is unloaded so should be very low consumption and would probably get around your problem. |
