Does DTT need another Plus One channel? Could broadcasters not come
up with a new channel?

By James Welsh

Dave's one hour timeshift will commence broadcasts on Freeview later
this month, it was confirmed today.

UKTV has secured capacity from multiplex operator Arqiva to offer Dave
+1 on channel 25 daily from 8am to 4am beginning on Thursday, January
22. The slot became available in October after Arqiva upgraded its
multiplexing and compression technologies.

"Dave is a key part of our highly successful entertainment portfolio
that has recently been re-branded and re-positioned to provide even
clearer propositions to viewers and advertisers," said Julia Jordan,
UKTV's executive director of business and operations. " Adding Dave+1
to Freeview will further extend the valuable 16-44 men reach of the
channel and will also continue to provide a strong platform to promote
to our lineup of channels that are available on platforms such as Sky
and Virgin Media."

As far as I am concerned, any channel+1 on freeviw is a waste of valuable
space.

No. There is nowehere near enough good material for the existing number
of channels.

What else would you put there? That cost as little?

Nothing. Increase the bitrate of the worthwhile channels.

OK ideas for a new channel.
Out takes channel. We could then rid the other channels of these shows.

Money channel. Financial advice of an up to the minute nature. If we
actually trusted it that is.

A channel that ran local news in segments from around the country at
predetermined times on the network so people could keep up to date and see
what was an issue in other areas.

You get local businesses to advertise in each section.

But how does Sky D have so many more channels? I suppose you could
argue that they are not 'good', but I would prefer archive stuff to be
shown rather than an immediate repeat of something that was on only an
hour previously.

I should like to see a channel of programmes from forty years ago or
more. Whatever happened to 'The Golden Silents' with Bob Monkhouse?

UKTV has loads of "other" channels that it could move to freeview.

I agree that it probably spreads its stuff too thinly across too many
channels, but that's not really relevant to whether it should move one.

How about a signed channel? That way, you keep people that need signed
channels happy, by not limiting content to the middle of the night and
you keep other people happy by not spoiling programmes with a signer in
the corner.

I occasionally find a use for a +1 channel when recording using a twin tuner
PVR. Sometimes there are three programmes I want to record at the same time.
If one is repeated on a +1 channel - problem solved.

But they could do that to more effect by getting rid of the sports
channels. At least the +1 services have some use.

+24. If you happen to miss/forget a programme, you will usually find that
you've missed it by more than an hour. But put it on the same time of day,
exactly 24 hours later, and there's a good chance you'll remember to watch.

BBC announcement:

The World will End at midnight GMT on Wednesday.
Watch the very special Jools Holland Hootenanny on BBC2
starting at 9 pm.

(It will be repeated on the BBC2 +24 channel)

Wonder if there is some contractual thing - one having to be paid for as a
repeat while the +1 comes under a cheaper rule?
