Sky box auto shutdown nonsence
 

Thankfully, these newsgroups had pre-warned me of the forthcoming "problem".

Twice yesterday, my (Grundig) "Sky" receiver, who's only function is to feed
Bloomberg TV round my home/office, shut its self down.

Who the **** do Sky think they are shutting down devices in peoples' homes
without so much as a formal letter of notice or the basic courtesy of asking
for consent? (Rhetorical question).


After about 2 mins, I found out how to disable this unwanted sabotage of my
Sky receiver.


I can imagine across the country in gyms, restaurants, offices, and schools,
many others are struggling with this newly created technical fault.

It's fairly well spoken about .Apprently it happened with a recent
update .It happened to me and I couldn't figure out why until I
happened to see something on Dig Spy about it . If the box isn't used
for a while after 2300 Hrs it issues a warning and then goes in to
stand-by if you don't do anything .
The option can be changed in the Serices menu.

Don't receive "Sky Mag". Don't subscribe to Sky.

Don't watch Sky. Don't watch adverts.

Sorry mate, but the modification of my private hardware was not something I
agreed or consented to, and this BTW is why my main viewing is via my
Topfield not via Sky.

The world is full of idiots who have modern technology and can't disable
irritating functions, such as auto-flash on camera's. Manufacturers are keen
to Go Green, making power saving the default mode so that such idiot's
don't have to enable it for themselves, as if they could. Those who aren't
phased by user options are quite capable of disabling it.

SKY goes off by magic.

Perhaps, then, they might have thought of such a "feature" 10 years ago,
instead of wasting a decade of power X by the user base.

It was not as if "Energy Star" and energy conservation wasn't around in the
1990s.

The real scandal is why there isn't a power switch on the Sky box to turn
off not just the RF modulator but the full transformer.

This isn't about energy saving. This is "green washing".



It is somewhat academic for me since all my equipment sits on a UPS anyway
which will always be energized and wasting energy (because in this digital
age where devices don't just switch on but require lengthy slow reboots and
any kind of power interruption causes havoc to my dozens of systems).

Too many users wouldn't know how to upgrade the software if told to do it
manually. Equally users wouldn't like to find that they start to get faults
which others have already found and SKY have fixed. So SKY fix them and load
the new software in the background. It's no different from having your PC
set up to autoload updates.
