Need Some Guidance - OTA vs. DirecTV

Hello,

I have a Mitsubishi 46" Rear-Projection HDTV-Ready set down in my
basement that has pretty much served as a movie set only. I also have
DirecTV service w/ no HDTV dish or receiver. At the moment, I've got
a standard satellite receiver attached to my Mits in the basement. I
would like to start taking advantage of some sort of HDTV programming
but the current setup doesn't make things too easy. Frankly, it's
frustrating. If I understand it right, either I need a new dish and
new receiver to get DirecTV's HD packaging (costs a lot), or, I can
get an OTA antenna and tuner to view local stations digital broadcast
(like watching 24 on Fox or select sporting events in HD).

HDTV through DirecTV would give me HD movies and consistent HD quality
programming, but no local network stuff in HD. Even if I get a combo
receiver that does both DirecTV and OTA, I still have to drop dough on
a new receiver + dish and installation. Then I'm also faced with yet
another receiver surcharge. I guess I'm leaning towards just using
the downstairs TV to pull a digital signal. Could anyone provide more
information? What gear would I need, etc.?

Thank you,

Matt

You seem to have assessed the situation well. What other
information are you looking for?

I will tell you what I did and what I would do differently...

I went with Dish and subscribed to the $29.99 package + $9.99 HDTV
package with free equipment. The HDTV package is pretty lame. ESPNHD is
not in HD, it is a 4:3 stretched digital signal. HDNET is really lame.
HDNETMV shows mostly 3rd rate movies, but they do look good.
DiscoveryHD is the only channel of the package that I watch on a
regular basis.

I use a pair of rabbit ears to pull in 4 local HDTV stations. CBS leads
the way on HDTV. The quality from my CBS affiliate, WRAL, blows away
anything on Dish. With a proper antenna I could probably double the
amount of HD OTA stations. Sadly, the UPN affiliate broadcasts HD at a
paltry 9kw so that from only 6 miles away they are not even a blip on
the signal meter.

What was not mentioned in any of the literature and I did not think to
ask, is that the HDTV reciever will only convert OTA stations if you
are subscribed to Dish's HDTV package. In retrospect, I think I should
have bought a standalone HDTV reciever.

Any recommendations for an OTA tuner?

Thanks,

Matt

I would call DTV and ask for customer retention they are giving a sammy sir
ts360 or a hughes htlhd both are 3rd gen receicers with ota tuners for $99
incuding the dish and install. Be sure to tell them that dish is offering an
HD receiver for free. There is a 12 month commitment to total choice to get
this deal. I got the sammy 360 and it's great i get 9 ota digital stations
in ATL.
