Another Humax Copying Question

I read the earlier thread about copying programs from a Humax with
great interest as I have a program that I want to save.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of copying direct to a DVD
writer with a SCART lead, instead of using the programs discussed?
It seems much simpler, but is the quality not as good?

Thanks for any advice.

Copying direct to a DVD writer involves a slight loss of
quality. The other disadvantages a

1. It is slower than using the USB connection to a PC.

2. You cannot watch anything else using the Humax while you are
copying.

3. The best picture quality is obtained using the RGB output
from the Humax. That is available only on the "TV SCART" socket.
Using that socket what is copied to the DVD is everything that
the Humax displays on the TV screen. This will include a brief
"Start recording by reservation..." message if a timed recording
starts while you are doing the copying.
I don't know whether those messages are included in the output
via the other Scart socket, the one labelled VCR SCART.

Thank you Peter for that very prompt and helpful reply.

If I do decide to copy by SCART I will need to be able to see the
Humax output on the screen at the same time, to cue the DVD recorder
at the exact times. I was thinking that I could keep the 'TV output'
connected to the TV for monitoring and use the 'VHS output' for the
DVD recorder. From what you say it would be better to swap the outputs
around.
It looks like this is not so straight forward after all.

Going back to the USB method mentioned in the earlier thread, if I use
the VLC media player on my PC, can I edit the video file before
burning to a DVD, or will that need yet another program?

Sorry about the very basic questions!

I'm also reminded of a friend who did it the pc way but never watched the
file before burning, and ended up with a great recording with the sound out
of sink all the way through. I hsad to lagh as I told him I never bothered
about such details these days...grin...

I don't know about the VLC media player. I use the
HumaxMediaController to copy the file from Humax to PC:
http://www.enigma.eclipse.co.uk/huma...Controller.htm

I then use VideoReDo to do any basic editing I want - removing
stuff before and after the start of the programme and removing
ads during it:
http://www.videoredo.com

VideoReDo costs money, but I already owned it before getting the
Humax.

At the moment I use VideoReDo Plus and then create a DVD using
CyberLink PowerProducer (which came free on the PC I'm using). I
might upgrade VideoReDo to the TVSuite version.

Thank you again Peter.
I will look at VideoReDo, I don't mind paying for good software. I
have the Nero suite for burning the DVD.

You have been most helpful.

Peter, a last thought...
I presume from what you say that the Humax streaming file can be read
directly by VideoReDo?

Ah I should have mentioned a small problem. Sometimes VideoReDo
refuses to open a .ts file from the Humax complaining of "No
PIDs specified...". When that happens I use the Xilisoft Video
Converter program which can read the file and output a file that
VideoReDo will read.

Someone with experience of using other software to handle Humax
files might be able to give further suggestions.

Just to report that I have done the job successfully!
I used the Humax software to copy the program to PC, then VideoReDo
TVSuite to edit it. Still have to burn to DVD as I have run out of
disks, but that should not be a problem.
VideoReDo certainly makes editing very easy, frame by frame.

Your advice was 100% - thanks again!
