I'm thinking of buying my first HDTV. Is it better to go bigger or
better? I'm thinking between a 52" Samsung ln52A650 for around $2000
or the newer 46" Samsung ln46A950 for probably around $3000 (my
guess). The ln46A950 has a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1, local
dimming backlight LED.

Have you ever heard anyone saying they should have got a smaller screen? Go
for the bigger set. Consumer Reports raved about the ln52A650:

"This 52-inch 1080p model from Samsung is one of the best TVs we've ever
tested. It has excellent picture quality across the board, and was one of
the few tested models with excellent sound."

If this is your main set in a normal sized living room, I think 46" is a bit
on the smallish side. I have a 61" set in my living room and sit about 10
feet away from it. I love it!

I'm very pleased with my LG Plasma 42" for $1,099. I don't see the point
at spending as much as you are talking about spending.

I should've mentioned I'll be viewing it from 8' away.

The Samsung LN52A550 is not that much cheaper, I can get a Samsung 40"
for a lot cheaper but when I viewed them, the 40 and 46 incher, at 8'
away the 46" to me was noticably better (this with the same model,
A650, but different sizes). So now it's between a larger 52" and a
smaller but higher quality 46".

I have a 42" Samsung and sit about 8' away in the couch or 10' away in
the lounge chair. I don't see any problem.

We have a 50" Samsung plasma and sit 8-10 feet away. Occasionally,
especially in the beginning, I wondered if we had gotten too big a
screen for our room. The picture is great and I still marvel at the
quality. I rarely, but still occasionally wonder if we should have
gotten a slightly smaller screen. It has to do with how wide an image
you can view from that distance, like sitting to close to the screen in
a movie theater, and different distances are comfortable for different
people.

However, we have a Wii and for the Wii sports the larger screen is
terrific and I just wish I had a bigger room. :-) We're not into video
games at all, other than the Wii sports and now the Wii Fit. And for
the Wii Fit the smaller screen would be just fine.

If eight feet away were my maximum TV/DVD distance, and sometimes people
would sit closer, I think the smaller screen would be better.

Do a search on "Which Size HDTV Should I Buy?" and you'll find lots of
other advice.

Thanks everyone for the help. I went to a local Best Buy and viewed a
40, 46 and 52 inch Samsung from 8' away. The 40 inch was too small,
there was a noticable increase in viewing quality (subjective to me)
with the 46 inch with a lesser increase for the 52 over the 46.

I know somewhere online I saw recommendations for how far to sit from a 42"
50" etc. Can anyone point me to that? I have a 42" and I sit 10-12 feet
away depending if I'm reclined in my lazyboy or not, and it seems
appropriate.

I paid $999 for a 47" Vizio, plus $99 shipping.

Ya gotta shop around.

The "point" to cost is a personal opinion/decision, based an many
factors.
