BBC I Player admitted to be inaccessible

On Tuesday, R4 In touch did a follow-up on a complaint from a blind listener
that now the new all singing and dancing I Player was on line, no longer
could he spool through a program to find the item to listen again to, as on
the old listen again system.

It transpired, that despite the week before the project guy saying it was
accessible, it turned out that the slider which replaced the skip controls,
was an inaccessible flash element thus meaning it ujust was not seen by any
access software.

An embarrassed BBC spokes person had sent a response apologising and that
the problem would be fixed by October.

It rather makes one wonder who the wally was who allowed a launch of a part
finished system as these complaints seem to have reached mainstream news
yesterday as I heard it mentioned on a commercial radio station. Shot
themselves in the foot again.

Whatever happened to 'if it aint broke, don't fix it'?

Mind you if some of these commercial stations looked at their own web sites
they would find a complete shambles. Its just as well many of them do not
have programs anyone would want to listen again to in the first place!

This fails to take into account the needs of the Marketing department.
Marketing is a religious experience; therefore it is not permitted to
question the needs of the Marketing department.

IIRC the interview in original programme made much of the way the new player
had been developed with several rounds of consultation with blind users.
Methinks perhaps someone has been econimical with the truth - as, for
example, in omitting to add "but we ignored much of what they said"?

That's what 'consultation' means to corporations (and government).

Or more likely in my experience, it was altered by the web authors to make
it look sexy and screwed up in the process.

Tee hee, well also I notice that the links I have for the old listen live,
some work, some don't throwing up random betsie errors for those that go via
the text version and in yet others, one gets a one liner saying click here
to listen with stand alone player due to the page not being text
convertible.

Looks like a bit of a mess to me. What is the point of it all on the radio
side?

It all worked fine before!

Either that or "we couldn't see eye to eye with them".
