It was only a matter of time wasn't it? Try describing to a non-techno what a digital television receiver with a hard drive does and they're baffled, but then tell them it's "like Sky Plus, but for Freeview" and understanding immediately dawns. I describe TiVo to some people as "Like Sky+, but it works properly and doesn't crash and require a full reformat whenever it feels like it" Like Sky+ but with inferior picture quality & unable to record two programmes at once or watch one programme while recording another. TiVo was ahead of its time but sadly is now let down by old technology that needs updating. If we had the advances that the US and Australia do then it would kick Sky+ arse in more departments, but as for picture quality I record most things on Best or Higher which is fine - and I have a bigger beef about the fact that the source material quality has decreased over time in bitrate, but then they did that to eventually try and sell us HD and so if that takes a foothold then the same thing will happen in a few years time when they sell us something else. Two tuners - Once in a blue moon is this a problem and I have a DVD recorder as well. -- Dom Robinson Gamertag: DVDfever email: dom at dvdfever dot co dot uk /* http://DVDfever.co.uk (editor) /* 1185 DVDs, 376 games, 451 CDs, 114 cinema films, 56 concerts, music & news /* gta 4, waz, sweeney todd, city of heroee, heavenly creatures, blade trinity New music charts - http://dvdfever.co.uk/music.shtml Youtube - http://uk.youtube.com/user/DieHardDom |

There was a VHS video with a Freeview single tuner built in - it was made by Daewoo. And, in fact, I believe it's one of the pieces of equipment rendered unusable by recent "improvements" in the Freeview specs. I can say with some level of certainty that a VCR with DTT tuner will never again arise. Nevermind a double tuner version that can't record 2 channels at once (although some PVRs can't do that either). The freeview specs have not changed, nor have the DVB-T ones, its just that they were not clear and companies wrote for the now, rather than the complete standard. You could blame the mfrs for poor software or you could blame the broadcasters for stupidly complex standards. This was another Setpal sourced software and was actually a very good product compared with analogue VCRs. The people responsible for Setpal are no longer together and hence software is no longer supported. -- Tony |

The Freeview Plus name will be rolled out across retail and packaging over the next few months. The move is part of an increased marketing effort to drive awareness and sales of Freeview’s digital TV equipment. Marketing communications director Rob Farmer says: “We are now upping our efforts and since ‘Plus’ has entered the vernacular in recent years, we think it makes sense to reposition ourselves to take advantage of that.” Sales of the recording boxes have been sluggish since launching in April 2007, with around 330,000 sold. However, the basic Freeview box is in more than 15 million homes and in March the company recorded “all-time high” sales for 2007 with 9.7 million branded products sold. More than a third of Sky's 8.8 million subscribers have a Sky Plus box. Freeview is owned by DTV Services, a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, BSkyB and National Grid Wireless. It offers free-to- air digital television, unlike the subscription services of Sky and Virgin Media, the cable operator whose own digital recorder is branded Virgin Plus. It also faces competition from Freesat, the subscription- free satellite service from the BBC and ITV. Uptake of digital TV recorders is growing 76% year on year, according to figures from GfK, which Freeview hopes to accelerate further with the rebrand and marketing campaign. Analogue video recorders will be defunct following the switchover to digital, which is being rolled out regionally up to 2012. Quick question, if you're able to assist: If a PVR is branded "Freeview Playback" (or "Freeview Plus"), does that mean that it will have the facilities for: (a) series link / season pass? (b) some sort of broadcast signal control of how long the recording lasts (as opposed to strict point-to-point timing control according only to the EPG)? I ask because I'd like to replace my Dgifusion PVR which doesn't do series link and which has a habit of missing the beginning of programmes which start earlier than billed (something thst the Sky+ doesn't do).- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - The latest versions of the digifusion PVRs have series link, but it is apparently very buggy. The people on the AV Forums are very helpful on this subject... http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=47 Sorry for the late reply, and many thanks for the info. I decided to buy a Humax PVT (twin tuner, etc). A little bit pricey compared to most PVRs on the market - though not as dear as a Topfield - but working excellently over the last few weeks. |
