Freesat is it selling to Joe Public?

I did a Freesat installation for an old guy this morning. Probably about
75 he was. He'd bought the box and tried plugging it into his old Astra
19deg satellite.

I set it up and got it all running, but to be honest I wasn't that
impressed with the channels available or the picture quality. It was the
Humax HD box, connected to a Sony 32" Bravia via HDMI cable. The menus
looked fantastic (quality / resolution) but the channels were pretty poor.
BBC HD looked better but still nowhere as good as a CRT.

Sorry to ask this but did you set it up correctly?
I'm told Humax the only one that gets all fta channels, eg same as a Sky box
or normal box.

Also isn't the Humax known to give poor pictures than the other makes.

It doesn't really matter to the BBC
and ITV if people use Freesat or Freesat-from-Sky or generic free-to-air
sat boxes -- it's still a good result for them.

So why no ITV HD via a Sky box?

The 'Alba' boxes have, or are to get, the facility to receive
non-freesat free to air channels. (Alba = Bush, Goodmans and Grundig)

many customers have been complaining about poor quality SD pictures on
the Humax Foxsat HDMI output. It may be that if the Humax does the
up-scaling the picture looks 'soft' but if you send the 'original' data
to the TV and then let the TV do the up-scaling the picture looks a lot
better.

At the moment the Humax Foxsat is not worth its £150 price tag seeing it
has another serious problem on HD.

Your newsreader messed up the quoting. Fixed.

So why no ITV HD via a Sky box?

That much is a fair turn about, I guess, since freesat-from-sky wouldn't
provide ITV HD, you don't get it on the Sky premium price HD service
either.

I expect that it'll be available on Sky eventually -- once the public
have got the idea that they don't have to pay an excess for it.

Some of the stuff they show is distinctly marginal as HD. Wimbledon was
stunning, though - when the HD cameras were in use. ;-)

Pretty sure it was setup correctly. I went through all the settings and
couldn't see much difference between different resolutions. Settled for
1080i in the end. Was connected via HDMI cable only. The box has a Freesat
mode and non Freesat mode so can be used to receive not Freesat channels if
required. The guy was over the moon but to me it just didn't seem that
great, even on the BBC HD channel.

Is Joe Public going for Freesat, does not look to be when in a shop I'm
wondering if it a dead duck.

Until freesat add the 'promised' more channels - then its never going to
be a buzz word option for joe punter - more so as the tv guides dont
even list the freesat channel numbers at the moment .

I'm going to get it when Five and more radio stations join!

Why wait when if you can get five etc if you get sky freesat fitted ? .

Because then you are stuck with the crap sky EPG, and you don't get the
free HD channels.

For a truly horrible epg the one with the Alba HD boxes (Bush, Goodmans,
Grundig) takes some beating. AFAIK the only free HD programming you don't
get form Sky is ITV.

Not seeing new/different dishes on houses, what sort of dish fitted, same
make design as Sky?

Can't see HD being attractive to Joe unless BBC1 and ITV1 is in HD.
Might you Joe probably thinks because he got a Plasma/LCD flat screen he
got
HD now.

I love the idea that you can ask a member of the GBP what TV system
they have, and they will be able to tell you.

I was talking to someone the other day who was quite happy with her
new Freeview service. What she actually had was a basic Sky
subscription.

Cheers,
David.
