People who "brand" channels should be fired

On this week's Heresy, about 5:30 into the Listen Again stream, there
is a classic comment from David Mitchell...

"There's a whole profession of people who think that branding channels
is actually a job. It shouldn't be a job - they should all be fired".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/heresy.shtml

I thought some of the DOG and similar "presentation intrusion" haters
in this group would enjoy that.

Cheers,
David.

On Tilt on BBC7 a while ago there was a sketch about News24 where
someone was trying to read the news and kept getting interupted by
people shouting NEWS24, TICKER TAPE SAYS ... , and PRESS RED FOR
INTERACTIVE NEWS every few seconds.

Yeh, but the co-presenter, normally the bimbo, does that on the real
channel anyway... :~(

In my case, people who do that are fired.

BBC - you're fired.
Sky - you're fired.
ITV - don't even waste my time.

Come back to me when you don't turn up at my house / office with DOG-**** on
you.

a radio station like R1 or 2 were DJs quite often hand over to the
next DJ....

Yet again you
demonstrate your utter stupidity.

Anyone know why have Five Live have recently added "and /now/ in-car" to
their listening methods?

She's had one in there for years, she said on Feedback years ago that
she listens to Radio 3 on a car DAB, that's why R3 is much higher
quality than everything else.

are you talking about the same person? The Controller of Radio 5 Live is
male.

No, the controller of digital radio, the person who gets to decide what
bitrates are used.

that person wouldn't decide the Radio 5 Live jingles.

But the jingle doesn't say that DAB is now (any more than before)
available in-car it just says that R5L is now available in-car, as
though *any* radios in cars are a new thing.

"Now" is basically what the BBC use to provide back-door promotion of
things, in order that it seems to have some justification and is not
perceived as an obvious plug (which might just conflict with the
non-commercial requirements of the BBC).

Hence, "and now in-car" provides handy promotion for the new range of
affordable, "plug-inn-able to your tape deck" DAB car radios. You will
notice that the commercial radio stations are also doing a big push on
these right now - this, of course, must be a coincidence because the
BBC would never engage in commercial promotion by the back door.

Similar uses of "now" promotion include Freesat. E.g. "We just wanted
to tell you all about BBC HD. Now you've been able to get BBC HD on
nasty old Sky or cable for the last couple of years, during which time
we never mentioned the service once, BUT NOW THERE'S FREESAT, which is
brilliant and free and new and available at Comet and Argos in fine
selected colours. And this is not a commercial, oh no. Buy Freesat."

Comprable commercials of even less subtlety have been running across
other BBC Radio outlets, too.

However, the following doesn't have quite the same ring:

"On the Internet, on the two digital television platforms, on DAB, and
using the GE/Zenith pilot tone stereo system on a frequency modulated
carrier between 88 and 91 megahertz on VHF band II, this is Radio 2
from the BBC."

No, far more glorious! It'd be nice to have that sort of thing,
occasionally - bit like giving the Queen's full title (you know, "..
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Channel
Islands, .." and so on almost to Rockall. Should be someone with a
sonorous voice, too. And of course "BBC" would be in full too ...

Yes, good old medium wave and BBC local FM stations after 1am,
RadioFiveLiveSportsExtra is only on new-fangled DAB/DTT/internet etc.
