Satellite TV without a phone line

I was all set to order the Sky 'Pay Once' package for my holiday home
when I remembered there is no phone line there - or to be more
accurate there is but it's disconnected as these days most people have
mobiles, and most networks now have coverage where the house is.

Any suggestions as to what the alternatives are? Obviously having the
phone line reconnected will let me in for four bills for the mandatory
year the Sky setup has to be connected, adding some £120 to the bill.

Ask Sky to sort something out. Lots of people don't have a land line these
days.

yeah, as long as it's just one box I think it's a one off extra
payment of something like £20 and they ignore the phone line.

Is there a reason why the FreeSat service (heavily trailed on BBC, etc)
won't do what you want ?
Nothing to do with Sky, no phone back-connection required.

I would have to get a dish installed. The Sky package includes
getting that done.

All Sky do is sub contract it to one of your local installers. There's
nothing to stop you calling the installer direct, and you might get a
better deal from them anyway.

So far as I can tell from bt.com, the nearest installer is over an
hours drive away (in Oban, property is the other side of Fort William
to Oban). Pretty much 50 miles each way. I doubt I'll get much of a
deal from them - they will spend over 2 hours travelling, plus all
that expensive fuel. I reckon I need to see if I can get something
with Sky where the lack of a phone line isn't an issue.

fixed cellular terminal - "premicell". These use a sim card to connect
to the mobile phone network and have a socket to plug a normal phone (or
skybox) into. Note that the free calls made by the skybox might not be
free from a mobile phone.

The device might not be cheaper than getting the phone line installed,
but at least you can take it with you. I also don't know if sky will
accept a mobile phone number as being a valid 'location' for the box.

There is a landline, it's just not connected at present - since most
people have mobiles there wasn't any point in reconnecting it when I
started letting again. However the very bottom end of the Premicell
items seem to be less than 4 quarters rental on a landline.

BTW once a Sky box is installed, how can they tell if it's connected
to the phone line or not?

by it phoning home.
having said that, the only ones they police are multiroom - with the others
you can simply disconnect the box straight away.

Just got one of these for some equipment that we rarely use but don't
want to pay line rental for. There are SIM's around for a couple of quid
or so line rental but the call charges are to be paid for....

That loks to be the same price as having the BT line reconnected for a
year, which is the only commitment I have to give about the box....
