Upconversion - TV vs. DVD
Please verify the following statements:
The TV will upconvert a fed signal (say DVD at 480p) to 1080i. The upconverting DVD player will feed an upconverted 1080p signal to the TV. The TV is a Sony XBR that has the ability to display 1080p; the DVD player has the 1080p upconversion capability (also Sony). Hence, it appears that the DVD player upconversion should be a better way to go. Not sure if there will actually be any discernible difference. I have the equipment and was wondering if I'm looking at the parameters correctly. TIA. |

There's usually a menu option for what you want it to do. The upconverting DVD player will feed an upconverted 1080p signal to the TV. Only if it supports 1080p upconversion. Upconversion ought to be upconversion, but I'm sure some implementations are better than others. Won't a 1080p upconverted signal from the DVD pass through HDMI while its 480p signal will have to get to the TV via component cables? Will that make a difference? Don't know. R / John |

I'll burn a couple of copies of a DVD and play them simultaneously in two DVD players. One is connected to the TV via component cables while the other uses an HMDI interface. I'll display both signals using the PNP feature and see if there is a significant difference. Give me a couple of days to get this done. |
