A hook-up question

I now have my HDTV hooked up and running. Now going to hook up my Sony Home
Theater using one HDMI cable from the Home Theater to the HDMI Input No. 2
on the TV as per the Home Theater manual.

The hookup diagram in the TV manual also call for a digital optical audio
cable from the Home Theater system to the optical output on the TV.

I have no problem doing this but what is the purpose of the optical cable?
(Need to but the cable tomorrow.) Is the purpose of that cable to provide
audio from TV to the Home Theater System? That's my guess anyway.

Thanks, Dave C.

That's exactly right... the optical cable is a standard TOSLINK
connection for when you want to directly feed the TV from a cable/sat
box w/HDMI or OTA RF antenna, but want to use an external AVR for audio
processing in lieu of using the internal TV speakers. What you do is
set the TV's audio to 'external' and the TOSLINK cable carries PCM audio
to your AVR while the video stays with the TV.

Oh, I forgot to say the TOSLINK cable is useful for those that have a
connection for it on their AVR (most do), but don't have an HDMI
input/output on the AVR.

Ah...that's nicely explained. I'll pick up a cable tomorrow. Also thanks
for the detail.

Your first explanation was more on the spot.
The digital audio connection from the TV to the AVR is used for audio
output from the TV to the audio amplifier. It has nothing to do with
if the audio amplifier has HDMI connections or not.

(As a side note: depending on the TV and the input to it, the
transfered audio might be in PCM or Bitstream with capability of DD
5.1 etc.)

I have two systems... one AVR (older JVC) doesn't have HDMI switching
capabilities, but it does have a TOSLINK input. I feed the incoming sat
RF signal to the TV, and backfeed the audio out via TOSLINK to the AVR.
For the sat channels that offer DD5.1 audio, it works well.

The other AVR (newer Sony) has HDMI ins/outs - and is on the main
system, so I don't need the TOSLINK on it. I feed everything
(sat/DVR/BD) to the AVR via HDMI, output video via HDMI to the TV, and
let the AVR process the native audio (I don't use OTA here).

For both systems, the AVR is decoding the audio.

(As a side note: depending on the TV and the input to it, the
transfered audio might be in PCM or Bitstream with capability of DD
5.1 etc.)

The Sony AVR displays whatever audio stream it sees, sometimes it shows
PCM (48/96Kbs), and sometimes it shows 3/2.1 or or even 2/0 - I'm not
usually looking at it, but this changes from time to time depending on
the sat program source. For BD playback, it shows 3/2.1 or 3/3.1 or
3/4.1 or 2/0 from one disk to another.
