Many remotes makes... problems
All,
There are now two sets of postings on this NG about "dualing remotes". Both of these are in regard of "2 of the same manufacturer's products", however I'm close to having a clash between my Sanyo TV and Humax PVR (switching Humax channels in a certain mode also alters the Sanyo volume!). Anyone know what the manufacturers are doing about this? This is only going to keep getting worse and worse. My suggestion would be something along the lines of creating a standards body to define the various signals required for different devices and also to permit some way to define "use code table X for my DVD" etc. There are clearly 1000s of available IR signals (if the number of programmable combinations on my cheapo programmable remote are anything to go by) so it's not a difficult problem to solve, if someone has the foresight to do it. Paul DS. A few years back I thought the system used by Philips might well become the standard as I came across a couple of other brands using the same codes. But it seems not to be the case, and as you say the situation is crazy Cooperation can happen eg the Sky box, but of course it is Sky who did this. Think it might well be a Philips design or company who make them. I would have thought BBC Freeview would have done same but did not, hope the BBC learn for their Freesat! -- Regards, David Please reply to News Group |

I have two Panasonic disk recorders each of which can be set to one of three different codes so that each remote only operates its own machine. This feature wasn't prominently highlighted in the manuals but reasonably simple once found, so it might be worth a search to see if other manufacturers have included the same thing. I'd guess that the probability of different manufacturers agreeing on a standardised control system for all is close to zero. Rod. |

There are some distinctly dodgy things in the RC5 (Philips) remote control protocol but it's so long ago I can't remember the details, volume control was one iirc. In parts the spec is excellent, but in other areas it gave the impression of being slung together after the whole design team had spent a week smoking dope. -- |

My 3 year old was in floods of tears the other day because our PVR remote occasionally sets our cheapo 'home-cinema' amp instantly to max volume! It was painful even to my ears, still trying to find the exact button though. Z |
