Receivers - Is Any One Truly Superior to Competition?

Greetings,

Several years ago, the receiver one chose made a great deal of
difference in the speed menus came up, etc. We are about to return to
satellite as we are in a rural area and wish to receive HDTV.

Is it worth spending the extra money for Sony, or whatever, or are all
receivers fairly much the same in today's market.

Thanks for any insights.

I would not rate the Sonys at the top at all. Among the mainstream products
consider Yamaha, Denon, or Marantz. The most consistently excellent
products that I have worked with and worked on over the last couple of
decades have been the Yamaha. Denon at times has had some excellent
products, but they have varied more. Marantz has a longer warranty and has
had some very good products in recent years. In terms of features for the
dollar, Onkyo is usually pretty good, but the performance has varied a lot
and service and parts support are spotty, usually weak, in my experience.
Sony is very much average in audio products.

For a synopsis of HDTV receivers, see

You will find that the Sony receivers are made by LG for example.

Sorry about that last reply. I was thinking audio receivers as I was
reviewing a schematic and didn't pay close attention to the context...

He's talking about satellite receivers, not audio receivers.

Like I said in the second post, I apologize for not paying closer attention
to the context. My remarks were about audio receivers. HD receivers are a
completely different matter and the Sony is a fine choice.

According to information found at:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=179095
DirecTV intends to begins standardizing receivers.

Does this make the question of which receiver to choose for best
quality a moot point?

quality a moot point?

Yes it will, once this standardization has begun. Unfortunately it will then
bring DirecTV down to the level of E where receiver choice was never an option.
It's very unfortunate whenever competition is squelched.
