How do I upconvert SD DirecTV?
I can't seem to find any information on upconverting a live feed from
SD DirecTV DVR to a HDTV.. I just purchased a Vizio 52 LCD. Great picture on upconverted DVD. The issue is I don't want to lock into a 2 year thing with DirecTV and pay $300 for a leased unit. I'd rather try to find an upconverter for the live feed from the DTV DVR. I purchased a Toshiba DVDR that upconverts but I'm being told it only upconverts the DVD signal. Are there any upconverters out there that will upconvert a DirecTV signal from a standard DirecTV DVR? Any help is appriciated. |

Your TV does it. All HDTV's that I know of do it, otherwise, the sd picture would be a small 720x480 4:3 image in the center of your screen. So if the sd picture is full height of your screen, it's already been upconverted. But you can't upconvert an 4:3 picture to a 16:9 picture. You can stretch it out to that, but that's something very different and results in a distorted picture. Some people do it. I can't stand watching it like that. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org My Tivo Experience http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/tivo.htm Tivo HD/S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm AMD cpu help http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php |

The reason it looks nowhere near as good as a DVD is that the picture is compressed to death before you get it. There's not enough information in the signal to make a good-looking picture no matter whose upconverter you want to use. Thanks all for the information. I bit the bullet and called DTV and told them I was going to get cable and I got the HD DVR for $99 but I still had to agree for a 2 year contract. Also, I realize that my TV does upconvert and that it would never be a true HD image but I was under the impression that there were better upconverters available and that the ones in the TV's were not that good. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. |
