Or his own private orchestra.

I got a guitar recently. The music's rubbish but the sound quality is
fantastic.

Much the same could be said of the harmonium in my hallway, rescued
from my previous neighbour before he moved out, because he mentioned
that he had been considering making it into a drinks cabinet. I have no
ability whatsoever to play music on the thing, but it makes interesting
noises, and the grandchildren love it.

Rather limited selection of pre-recorded material.

Many of the cylinder phonographs let you record your own. And erase the
recordings with a blade attachment.

You need the cutting head which are hard to get these days. It's
funny, you can get any spare part for a phonograph brand new, but no
cutting heads are made. Think I'll sell my massive horn. The small
one does a decent enough job.

For such a young man you are showing signs of considerable eccentricity,
Marky.

There was a brief craze in the early 60s for fitting an illuminated fish
tank in the cabinet of an old television set.

I went off Phiilps at about the time you must have bought it, due to bad
reliability and poor quaulity pictures compared with Panasonic and JVC.

I worked for a while at a Philips service agent.
Philips CRTs and Painter chips kept us in business.
Our van driver would "console" the customers as he
picked up the faulty sets. He would tell them every
Philips in the country was going faulty like theirs.
Not far from the truth, but that's not what you expect to hear.
Diplomacy wasn't his strong point.

My brother keeps telling me that for years, Philips made CRT's for all
TV manufacturers. Any truth in this? He is usually wrong. He
thought 'Merry Christmas Everyone' by Slade was christmas number 1 for
20 christmas' in a row.

Mullard - a subsiduary of Philips - certainly made CRTs, and might well
have made them for all UK manufacturers.

One of the first signs is lying about one's age.

Oh I see. Do you think Marky is old stubber like us then? Because of his joi
d'vivre and his naive attitude to the use of adhesives I rather thought he
was a teenager.

Be careful Marky. I was 36 when I had my mid-life crisis. I went completely
wappy for a while.
