hd-dvd/blu ray on 1080i

Unless you have a 1080p tv, is there any reason to get a blu-ray/hd-
dvd player instead of an upscaling dvd player that you can get for
under $100?

Thanks!

Yes.

I have a 1080i TV and the difference between upscaling a standard DVD
and either BluRay or HDDVD is large, not huge. Much nicer on the BD and
HDDVd than SD upscaled. Of course, that is also dependent on which
movie I'm watching. Some of the HDDVD and BD titles were not all that
much better than their SD counterparts.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD provide a HD source. They will look better on a
720p, 768p (1366x768 resolution which is common), 1024x768, or 1080i
display than DVD. A DVD with NTSC encoding is 720x480 resolution and is
stored on the disk in 480i format. It is also not just resolution, but
the color and overall picture quality will look better from the HD source.

The question is whether Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players have gotten to the
price point that is acceptable and whether there is enough BD or HD-DVD
content to make it worthwhile to you. The software is still maturing so
figure on performing at least several firmware updates over time to any
Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player you get.
