Question about HD upconverting DVD players

I have a 32" Olevia HDTV that has only one component video input and one
HDMI input. I'd like to keep my DirecTV running through the HDMI input
on the TV. Do DVD HD upconverting players still provide the
upconverting through the component video or is that just a standard
progressive scan signal? I already have a progressive scan DVD player
and don't want to bother with the upconverter if it will not upconvert
through the component cables.

TIA,

Chris

Upconverting over component is no longer allowed for reasons of Digital Rights
Management. There are some players that have unsupported firmware hacks to
bypass the restriction.

Deinterlacing (which is what progressive scan does) is more important to video
quality than scaling anyway. I'd stick with your current player (unless it's a
dog).

This site is all about deinterlacing performance; you might see if your player
is listed: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi

your tv is already upconverting - don't go buying a new dvd player expecting
some kind of HD quality improvement.

From your answer I have to wonder if you have even seen how much better
some of the new upconverting DVD players make a DVD look compared to the
ones that can't upconvert. I have to agree that SD DVDs won't look like
HD but the newer players do a much better job of upconverting than most
TVs do.
