Maplin's Barebone PVR
Saw it was now reduced to 49.99 so bought one and fitted a spare HD. Not
bad at all for the money. Picture quality looks as good as any. Not very nice to use compared to the Toppy - fiddly to set record, etc. Unless there are shortcuts I haven't sussed out - it came without a manual. -- *Two many clicks spoil the browse * Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

Yes I have been banging on about this (in a way) for some time now. Basically on the grounds of cost of such beloved things as the Toppy or Topfield (Top Price is more appropiate). http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/stor...ory_oid=-31867 Now put a 250 gig hard drive into the Maplin unit and you have the same product as the Topfield except you make a saving. You can get a 250 gig drive on ebay for £40 or slightly less, so that is a saving of £140 on the lovely Topfield (£230). Or you can get a 500 gig drive for £60 giving a total of £110, which is a £120 saving on the Topfield and you have twice the capacity!!. -- *Two many clicks spoil the browse * Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

It appears to do nearly everything that my Toppy does and at a much lower price. Maplin are not noted for being cheap so this product must be available at around half the price elsewhere - that will be cheaper than most Freeview boxes let alone a PVR. I'm sure that support for dual recording, interactive services, USB transfer, archiving with program names, Freeview playback etc. will come with the next OTA download. Just make sure that the drive is suitable for your viewing pleasure. Lower noise and lower power drives fitted to PVRs don't necessarily come in at the bargain end of the market - but they shouldn't cost much more than the price you quote. -- Alan news2006 {at} amac {dot} f2s {dot} com |

But by that criterion a Lada is all you'll ever need for a car. But it's nowhere near the same product - it can't for example record two progs at once. Something I use quite frequently on the Toppy. -- *Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.* Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |

But it's nowhere near the same product - it can't for example record two progs at once. Something I use quite frequently on the Toppy. :)) As does Tesco's Technika AEDTR160S7 which will record two proggies at once and which, at 110.00gbp, is now selling at a massive 140.00gbp less than the Toppy is in some places. I think the reference is at Tesco's Direct and the link is (if it wraps correctly): a href="http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-7337.aspx"Technika 160Gb Digital Video Recorder - Tesco.Direct/a Reliable, with a lightening fast EPG and Digital text, the Technika AEDTR160S7 is proving to be quite a bit of kit ..one which the User doesn't have to go crawling all over the 'net, nor own a Microsoft PC just to enable it's features - (as unusually reported by a John Lewis sales branch referring to the Toppy)... The Tecnnika AEDTR160S7 appears to incorporate the latest Freeview Playback standard and with an assorted search facility by various formats, including name, part-name, genre and such-like; with a fully selective archiving including titling and time/date stamping; inclusive of the original broadcast proggy descriptions, subtitling and with many other useable features, such as chapter insertion etc, pause, 'trick play', block advance etc, Technika's AEDTR160S7 is a delight to use. One slight downside, as recorded earlier by Daniel Cohen, is that when recording two proggies at the same time, it is presently only possible to watch a third prog already recorded on it's HDD - and apparently not a third proggy being broadcast on one or other of the muxes in use with it's twin tuners. (This might be addressed by an OAD which the pvr is set to uptake automatically or by User deference, when they appear)... The only real addition that would be very useful for me, is the ability to handle more than one zapper, an 'A' zapper and an alternative 'B' zapper. That way I could have two going at the same time, in the same room! Neither of the above is a particular problem to me, as I have another digital tuner in use anyway - nor, I suspect, will it be a problem to the many who now own similar or TVs with digital tuners incorporated. ...and at the sharp end ..piccies are indistinguishable from the original, being sharp, pleasantly saturated and without artifacts. Sound is clear and distinct, although as always will be improved by the sound system of the User's choice. Tesco's Technika AEDTR160S7 at 110.00gbp, (106.00gbp in store)? I think well, well worth that minimal outlay! Have a happy Christmas yo' all ..and a very fortunate and successful New Year... hh :)) Bill ZFC -- Adoption InterLink UK with -=- http://www.billsimpson.com/ Domain Host Orpheus Internet -=- http://www.orpheusinternet.co.uk/ |

What's the power consumption of the 40G drive you have fitted? The hard disks fitted to the latest PVRs are around 7W for 160G to 10W for 500G. -- Alan news2006 {at} amac {dot} f2s {dot} com |
