My mate moved into a house with an ancient Sky analogue dish and
cabling. We're wondering whether we could just replace the LNB with a
digital one, add a used digibox and be up-and-running? I suppose the
main questions are dish orientation and whether the cable is good
enough?

Incidentally,if you were to rig up an old analogue receiver, what channels
would you receive?

The dish will be pointing at ASTRA 19E which nowadays mainly transmits loads
of German channels.

OK, so the dish will need re-orienting, but along with the LNB
replacement, is that all we need to do? I haven't looked closely at
the dish yet, can I assume that a new digi LNB will fit physically?

You are almost certainly going to be better off getting a new mini-dish as
all the (very) cheap Universal LNBs on the likes of eBay will, most
likely, have fallen off Sky Vans and will be designed for them!

You shouldn't have a problem fitting a new LNB, and it should work all
being well.

From when I last looked at mine, you can still get CNN and Eurosport in
English. You used to be able to watch the Teletubbies in German (very
useful if you are learning German, except that 'Eh Oh' is the same as in
English). And, of course, on several of the German channels, there's the
traditional New Year's Eve broadcast, in English, of the 'Dinner Party'
(or whatever it is called). This is on at about 11pm German time.

I used to like watching werhe Leib (sp?) on one of the German channels
back in the analogue days. Presented by Lilo Wanders. Lots of tits
on there :-)

i certainly miss the days when satellite tv for 'normal' people was an
international experience - now it's only the rare owners of motorised dishes
that have such an honour.
