Satellite Freeview Multiroom Query

I live in an area with poor analogue reception - only the 4 main
channels and not good quality. Terrestial Freeview will not arrive in
our area until 2012.

I understand that I can install Sky and get Freeview channels without
paying any monthy rental. I am aware that Sky have a multiroom system
to allow 1 channel to be watched on multiple TVs. Does this mean that
I would have to pay the £10 monthly for multiroom even if I only want
Freeview channels ?

Or perhaps there is another way of doing this ? I have 2 TVs in 2
rooms and all I want is the Freeview channels. Any ideas would be
appreciated.

I believe you can get Freesat for £150 all installed and supplied.
You only need multiroom if you want to watch different channels in
different rooms. Cheapest way to do it is to buy two sky boxes off
ebay, sat dish and an LNB that accepts at least two cables. Stick sat
dish on wall, use cheap sat meter to alighn properly and bobs yer
uncle.

At risk of being nit-picky, you mean the 'Freesat from Sky' service. For
this you need a satellite dish, any old Sky box, and their £20 card. The
channel set is similar, but not identical, to Freeview.

The Beeb and its cohorts are soon to launch a competing free satellite
service, but it isn't available yet.

For the 'Freesat from Sky' service, make sure your dish has a quad LNB.
Then you can run up to four feeders into different rooms in your house. In
each room you need a second-hand Sky box (£20 on eBay) plus their £20 card,
coming to around £40 per room plus the cost of the telly.

For your needs you don't want to get involved in a subscription-based Sky
service.

Thanks for the replies.

The £20 card - is that a one off payment or does it need to be
renewed ?

Just to complicate my query, is it feasible to use a single dish to
supply Freesat to one room and a Sky subscription package to another
room ?

It is "guaranteed to last for at least 3 years" AFAIR. If Sky change
subscription smartcards within that period it will be replaced free.
Current Sky smartcards must have lasted about 4 years - and there is no
sign of a replacement.

Using a "quad-LNB" yes! This is a unit at the dish focus which can feed 4
Sky/Freesat normal receivers or 2 Sky+ (and probably Freesat) PVRs - or
any combination.
