DVD recorder - record from SCART

Colleagues,

A friend has rung me for advice, and unfortunately I can't help him. He
wants a DVD recorder with analogue and digital tuners, which will also
record from the SCART. That last bit is crucial.

He doesn't want one with a hard disk.

Now, Sony, Panny, Philips etc all do DVD recorders (most with hard disks).
However, when you look at their Web sites, none of them state whether they
will record from the SCART socket.

I've got a Panasonic, and that definitely will, but it also has a hard disk
so it isn't really what he wants. Another friend has a Philips and that,
also, will record from the SCART socket.

So here's the first question:

1/ In the absence of decent specs on the Web sites, it is reasonable to
assume that all dual tuner DVD recorders will record from the SCART socket?

The second question is:

2/ Is it possible to buy a dual tuner DVD recorder, which will record from
the SCART, but which doesn't have a hard disk?

I'm tempted to tell him to buy one with an hard disk, but I thought I would
be wise to ask you guys first.

Many thanks for any advice,

SteveT

Just as a follow-up, I can find only one box that seems to meet the
requirements: the Philips DVDR5500/05, which has analogue/digital tuners,
will record from the SCART, and has no hard disk.

I had to download the user manual to find out that it would record from the
SCART!

Does anyone have any experience with this product? Can anyone suggest
alternatives?

Thanks,

SteveT

i'm unaware of any dual tuner dvd recorders - they all tend to only have a
single analogue and (if you're lucky) digital tuner.
it's pvrs that tend to have 2 tuners.

Samsungs, Toshibas, Daewoos, Philips, Sonys ...all do models with
analogue AND digital tuners and all will record from the scart
socket.
Many cheaper brands have two scart sockets but will only record from
the second one. Most of the better ones will record from Scart one and
two which is good as you can connect them to a Sky box, for example,
using Scart 1 and say a VCR to Scart two.
This means that the output, when playing back, passes through the Sky
box to the TV.

You are not recording in RGB from Sky in this way but it does achieve
flexible use.
If you can connect the DVD recorder to the TV with Component
connections, you can make full use of each of the scart sockets and
any front inputs for recording.

Many thanks for your advice.

I'll forward your thoughts to my friend. Perhaps he will change his mind
and agree to one with a hard disk - it opens up the choices enormously.

Thanks again,

SteveT
