Sheffield DTT Reception - part 2
Well I've been. Son had a brilliant idea, why not use the bracket and
pole the Sat dish was fixed to? So we did. Dead easy to fit aerial to it, nice substantial bracket and pole. Immaculate signal for DTT, all muxes at high signal strength and minimum S/N. Got all available channels from Belmont, even though I'd pointed it halfway between Waltham (138deg) and Belmont(89deg)as a first option, with no drop outs of the ones we watched. Some very long interval slight hiccups, probably due to old car ignition interference or something in the pub switching. Slight problem, the aerial was very visible from below and at night, having a floodlight immediately below it, was well lit up. Not the impression wanted of the place. So next day I drilled the wall and fitted the cheapo crap Commtel bracket and pole lower down and away from said floodlight. The aerial was now behind the balcony railings which worried me, but signal strength was just as good. Commtel really do deserve the bad reputation of their product. Luckily I had some proper wall plugs, the ones Commtel supply really are rubbish. Drilling the wall with 10mm holes, as specified, resulted in their wallplugs just spinning when trying to tighten up the bolts. And I doubt the bracket will last the winter, it's so thin. I know I didn't want to leave a decent aerial, but I doubt this one will last a couple of years! My bodging isn't really rock bottom, so I found a piece of rope to tie off the aerial to the sign metalwork as a safety measure. Went round the outside of the place to take photos and discovered why none of the three aerials worked. I'd gone off the publicity photo of the place, which shows them properly fixed. The chimney fixing wires had obviously given way. Two were pointing downwards at the roof, and one was pointing 45 degrees to the road. Here's some piccies via the naff photobucket "slideshow" : http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/RichardTaylor/ I've told my son if the brewery still object to the aerial where it is to contact a proper aerial firm (i.e. Wright's Aerials) to come and put up a decent aerial on the chimney in a proper fashion. I doubt they will, it'll cost them money! We very proud of our son, and his first Managership. The meals we had in the pub were first rate. We understand the place was going downhill a bit - he's already improved things. So I was glad to be able to get him a decent TV signal, even if I did lower my standards a lot! Richard |

Commtel really do deserve the bad reputation of their product. Did you see Commtel's pathetic attempt to use this group as a marketing vehicle? 27/11/07 1141 -- Graham %Profound_observation% |

And I must stress that I didn't actually know the product I bought from maplin was going to be a Commtel aerial! I would have taken it back if I hadn't gone for cheapness, because my son will only be there for 2 years tops. Any permanent installation should use a proper aerial not one of these rubbish ones! The various old aerials on your pictures are all contract-type Group A ones, so they were obviously on Belmont. The only problem with Belmont round here when the field strength is OK is the CCI from Europe, which seems to happen quite a lot. Yes, I think we take at least as much pleasure in the achievements of one's children as we do in one's own achievements. We are very lucky because we have three kids who are all successful without being up their own arses. No doubt if your lad turns that pub round he will be whisked away to another problem one! Does he sell real ale by the way? If so I might take a small party up there. Bill PS by 'small party' I mean my very favourite small party, Hil. |

Better than by Punch! At least M & B, who own the Vintage Inns name, are Brewers running pubs. Punch are asset strippers running investments! In the case of the Dore Moor Inn some of those criticisms will be met next year! |

He was employed by S & N who got taken over by Spirit, who got taken over by Punch. Spirit sold off pubs to get their investment back. Punch turned the brand he worked in (Millers) into "pile em high, sell them cheap" 2 for a tenner. Neither Spirit nor Punch care much for their employees or customers. Punch are far worse, they've already sold off going concerns to realise the building plot potential. Richard |
