Going HD with Charter Cable - round 2

After Bill's News, I called back to talk to Charter again. They swear
the box is needed (I don't particularly believe them). And he was
uncertain if the box would have an HDMI cable. Was pretty fuzzy on
what it did have, he kept talking "channel 3".

So, I thought at the least we'd better have the new TV *first*, and
get the cable install *second*. What do y'all think?

Thanks.

J.

Now you're getting smart.

FWIW, I've not found a single Charter customer service rep who had any
idea what QAM was, much less that they supplied "some" in-the-clear
QAM channels. I don't remember if you said where you are, but on
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=45 you may find your
area; there are usually some knowledgeable folks in each of the areas
who can tell you what's what.

While they are helpful, I'd strongly suggest at least scanning the
last few months of posts and doing a search (on QAM) before posting;
there are some (but few) folks who feel it is not their place to help
noobs who haven't put forth some effort. If your skin is thin, they
may hurt.

My friends with Charter HD boxes have NONE with HDMI. I've heard that
some of the newer ones do, but have not seen one.

I would recommend that as well. Part of setup on most sets (all that
I've personally seen) will scan the incoming line for all available
signals. Be sure to have it on the cable, not terrestrial setting.

I am in Long Beach, CA and as of yesterday my QAM tuner in a Panasonic
TV did not pickup any unencrypted digital channels. The channels have
been steadily dropping over the last few months with Charter. As of a
few days ago I could only pickup Fox-HD, PBS-HD, UHD, MHD and the VOD
channels. Now, zip. Very annoying.

oops.

On the positive side, they've just now added HD for KCAL9 and FSN, so
the Lakers come in HD.

Guess we need the box.

Thanks for the link!

I have been waiting for an HDMI box from Charter for a year. OTOH,
the DVI output works fine with a DVI-HDMI cable.
