Which HDMI cable?
I want to buy a good HDMI cable to connect my xbox to my new HDTV
(1080p). I was looking at the cables available from eBuyHD.com and Monoprice, but am a bit confused by the all the options. For example, I can get a HDMI cables that is: * 1.3a Category 2 certified, or * CL2 rated, or * 1.3a with ferrite cores. Then among those, there's the choice of 24, 26, or 28AWG wire, silver or gold plating, etc. I want a good quality cable, but just don't want to pay the ridiculous prices Monster charges for theirs. Any advice on which type I should get? Thanks, -Pat |

By buying the cheapest cable, is there more of a risk that it won't work?

You know, I don't think I've read a single post from anyone saying that any HDMI cable that wasn't physically broken didn't actually work. m... By buying the cheapest cable, is there more of a risk that it won't work? Slightly greater risk, especially if it is mishandled. I would avoid the 28AWG versions. Even the "high quality" ones at ehdmi.com only cost about $15 in a 6 foot length. |

I purchased my cable from BigLots
and it works flawlessly linking my Oppo DVD deck to a Panasonic LCD TV. The price? 12 bucks and picture and sound are outstanding! But, my BL's sell them out as quick as they come in! Hope this helps. |

I would rather the cable bend itself, than run the risk of it twisting in the connectors on my equipment and damaging them. Alan |

By buying the cheapest cable, is there more of a risk that it won't work? perhaps - but if you bought a cable that didnt work you'd get a refund surely? when a cable doesnt work, you wont find your picture becoming a little fuzzier or the sound a little less clear - you'll have nasty, impossible to ignore massive picture breakup. and then you would return it to the store. -- Gareth. Thanks again for all the replies.
I'm guessing the main differences (that matter) between these cables are primarily mechanical, where the the better ones have stronger connectors and better tolerances so they don't fit too tight or (worse) too loose. To me, that would be worth paying a little more for. I really hate loose cables. These cables are all cheap enough though ($20) that I'll probably just pay a little more for one of the "better" ones - mainly for the peace of mind. I'm not going to worry about $5 or $10; $50 or $100 is another matter! Speaking of $50 or $100, it really does make me wonder how Monster can get away with charging what they do. The one the sales guy a hhgreg showed me was $170! Which is the accessory, the TV or the cable? It seems almost unethical, given how cheaply they can be had. Consumer Reports should really do an article on this to get the word out. Pat |

Pat Monster Cable's first product many years ago was very thick (low gauge number) speaker wire, which is much less subject to interference than line level cables. There are still many "audiophiles" who insist that a $5,000 pair of speaker wires (yes these do exist) are better than a $100 pair of speaker wires (still pretty expensive by most people's standards). It's a whole different world. |

news:db6c3e0e-b05d-4db3-91f4- Only $1,250 per meter! A steal. As a matter of fact, $1,250.00 per meter is a steal. Take a look these cables from Tara Labs: The Zero Interconnect: $12,800.00 / one meter, $1,800.00 for each additional meter. Omega Speaker Cable $11,995 / 10 foot pair, $1,000.00 for each additional foot. The Zero Digital Cable (RG-6) $5,995.00 / one meter, $1,200.00 for each additional meter. http://www.taralabs.com/images/27739_eprint.pdf I am quite sure that I could find even more expensive cables, but I am too lazy. Those who scoff at buying HDMI AWG24 cables for $15.00 at www.ehdmi.com instead of the AWG28 for about $7.00 should be ashamed. |

m... I wonder how much Robert Harley takes in from those companies for writing those fricking lies. What makes you think he is lying? He is a "true believer". Just like the many people who believe there was a second gunman who killed Kennedy, or who believe aliens landed at Roswell, or any of the other things people believe. Harley and all the other reviewers in high-end audio magazines do not take any money from the companies they write about, except for getting free samples to use for awhile. I am sure some of them advertise in the magazines. He pretty much says the same thing for all the high-end cables he auditions. He says those things because there are many readers who pay for subscriptions who want to read his opinions on the merits of very expensive cables. Unless you have evidence he is lying (that he knows what he says to be false) and you know that he accepts money from the vendors for saying these things (other than advertising dollars, which is transparent since you can see the ads), then you are also a "true believer." |
