Which HDMI cable?
 

Thanks again for all the replies.

I'm guessing the main differences (that matter) between these cables are
primarily mechanical, where the the better ones have stronger connectors
and better tolerances so they don't fit too tight or (worse) too loose.
To me, that would be worth paying a little more for. I really hate
loose cables.

These cables are all cheap enough though ($20) that I'll probably just
pay a little more for one of the "better" ones - mainly for the peace of
mind. I'm not going to worry about $5 or $10; $50 or $100 is another
matter!

Speaking of $50 or $100, it really does make me wonder how Monster can
get away with charging what they do. The one the sales guy a hhgreg
showed me was $170! Which is the accessory, the TV or the cable? It
seems almost unethical, given how cheaply they can be had. Consumer
Reports should really do an article on this to get the word out.

Monster Cable's first product many years ago was very thick (low gauge
number) speaker wire, which is much less subject to interference than line
level cables. There are still many "audiophiles" who insist that a $5,000
pair of speaker wires (yes these do exist) are better than a $100 pair of
speaker wires (still pretty expensive by most people's standards). It's a
whole different world.

in the analogue world they have space to argue - even if i happen to think
they are wrong.
when it comes to digital signals though, they can't get away with claiming
improved picture and sound - not that it stops them lying....

i recall a website claiming their cd cleaning liquid could be used on dvds
too to reveal 'previously unseen levels of detail' - crazy!

the same site sold some pebbles which you placed in the same room as your
hifi system to do the same for the quality of your music (!!)

What makes you think he is lying? He is a "true believer". Just like the
many people who believe there was a second gunman who killed Kennedy, or who
believe aliens landed at Roswell, or any of the other things people believe.

Harley and all the other reviewers in high-end audio magazines do not take
any money from the companies they write about, except for getting free
samples to use for awhile. I am sure some of them advertise in the
magazines. He pretty much says the same thing for all the high-end cables he
auditions. He says those things because there are many readers who pay for
subscriptions who want to read his opinions on the merits of very expensive
cables.

Unless you have evidence he is lying (that he knows what he says to be
false) and you know that he accepts money from the vendors for saying these
things (other than advertising dollars, which is transparent since you can
see the ads), then you are also a "true believer."
