Not this one, I don't think, after reading headers, but...
Do any of you know a group where users are wailing about compter TV
cards/USB sticks?
..
Delete: 'wailing' insert: 'asking for help'. 8(
Or is it a case of using the web groups?

Problems with PC TV cards can be 'vented' in this very newsgroup :-)

Glum. It's not the card (or rather USB stick) as such. It's the rotten
software that comes with it.
..
But touching on TV cards. I used to have an early Hauppuage digital card
which scanned happilly and ran without problems on an older Asus motherboard
with XP.
Then I changed machines and all hell broke loose despite the software and
drivers being the same. It was at this point I brought in a transmitter
scanner program and discovered that the power on one Sutton Coldfield
transmitter was sludging along at about 40%. Other users were yowling about
this and the effect it was having.
..
No problem. I could accept that, especially as I was using a cheapo
non-powered indoor aerial at the time. This room faces Sutton, which is a
faint blur on the horizon. Reception, even with a cheapo aerial, was/is
surprisingly good on most channels.
..
But another computer change meant the Haup. card had to be ditched.
I got cheaper USB stick, and no, I do not expect anything electrical or
computer related to work first time, and for ever and never have faults of
even bad parts - to say nothing of liking your particular computer set-up or
software.
..
All this preable is just to ask:: Am I right in thinking that the
transmitters change strength according to the tides, phases of the moon, or
the colour of the controller's socks on any particular day?
Do the signal we receive at the moment bear any relationship to the signals
we will receive once we all go digital?
And finally, have I got any chance in hell of being able to get all the
digital freeview programs, all the time? I would say not, myself but you
know what people tell you... Lying toads... 8)
..
As for the scanning software that came with this... thing... I will battle
on until I break something. It was ever so. I do not expect miracles.

Yes. Sort of. That is to say things like leaf growth on trees can
affect signal strength. Colour of socksis still being researched.

No. There's a website somewhere with post switchover tx power, but I
can't find it. In general tx power will go up post switchover.

Have you tried the dtt postcode predictor? Or the one at wolfbane?
These should tell you what type of aerial you require - in some/many
places some DTT muxes are broadcast outside the band the analogue
transmissionsuse.

Right. 8)
So the strength meter moving while I watch it, isn't a hardware fault then.
Well that's one local know-all who can go and boil his head...

8( sad
A polite way of telling me I need to hook up to a whopping aerial on the
roof?
This option is fraught with difficulties, and, after all, this is only a
little TV for my PC and it isn't as if I watch much TV anyway. BBC2, 1 and
perhaps channel 5. It is useful though when 'sport' is on downstairs.
Okay, thanks...
..
So I am left with my original problem which is software related, namely -
how the he.. heck can I do a manual scan without wiping out all the channels
the automatic scan found in the first place! Bah!
Losing the manual hasn;t helped, I threw it over the room and it
disappeared.
..
I will love you and leave all you techno-bodies then, and return to
blundering about hitting tabs at random and hoping for the best.
And a too-early Happy Christmas to you all.
