"Simon" wrote in message ... Name the venue. If you can't you are a liar. I don't see why I should respond to this. What's more I can't see the reason for it. What point are you attempting to make? Is it so extraordinary to visit a rough estate pub in a Sheffield suburb and find that they have engaged the services of a bad comedian? For anyone who wants to avoid this pub, please email me and I'll send you the details. Bill Was it part of a chain, or an indie? I'm interested because my son's just taken over a pub in SW Sheffield, and if oyur one is part of the same chain his area manager will be very interested! |

"Bill Wright" wrote in message ... "Chas Gill" wrote in message ... There was one heckler at the start, who objected to the (totally unfunny) racism. The heckler walked out. Maybe we should have done the same, but I was a sort of invited guest of the people I was with and it would have spoilt their evening. Bill But did anybody laugh? Nothing gets a "comedian" off stage quicker than an audience that looks the other way. If enough of the audience joined him in his puerile attempt at being funny then there would have been no stopping him. Unfortunately (I assume) there were enough similarly-inclined bigots in the crowd to feed him. A mass walk-out is the only cure, I'm afraid. Not only does it send a strong message to the performer but also to the dozy landlord that booked him - hitting him where it hurts the most - in his pocket. Doubt he'd do it again....... Well, you know, it was rather odd, and I think it said something about the British working class's confusion about PC and racism. They did laugh, to some extent, actually much more than the jokes deserved. I think it was because racism has been proscribed by the ruling and chattering classes, so there was an element of naughtiness about it. It was really rather like schoolkids laughing at bad jokes about sex, because it was naughty. There was an air of shared naughtiness. I think a lot of people have dual morality here, like the arms dealer in Pygmalian who kept his two moralities in watertight compartments. The live and work with Asians and negros and get on with them, but they will go to a pub and laugh at poor racist comedy material. The comedian was even more offensive about things other than race. He was appalling about disability and mental health. The odd thing, though, is that the material he used there was broadcastable, despite being grossly offensive. As a result it wasn't as well received as the racist material. That says something about the ruling/chattering classes extreme sensitivity to race issues as against other discrimination issues, and possibily about how counter-productive it is. Bill There is an element of society that feels that they need to laugh at this sort of humour - even if they aren't really racist - because it still seems necessary to do so to keep face with the peer group. In all probability most of the peer group would rather not condone the humour, but who is going to be first to reject it? I actually walked out on a bunch of mates the other night when the racist jokes got too much, being accused at the time of being a miserable old git. However, since then they at least recognise that I don't like them and apologise up front before they roll them out. One small step.................... Chas |

"Graham." wrote in message ... Like a fool Bill Yet another off topic post that is probably an invented story for more attention. The pub/club would have told him to stop it, people would have left if they were offended. Those who might have chosen to stay must be idiots - if any of that even happened. Going by other posts I don't think I can believe a word you come out with now! And who the **** are you? I think that Marky expressed it very eloquently. I would have walked out, as noisily as possible. Because of the racism... ...or the lack of real ale? -- Graham %Profound_observation% Simon, You challenged Bill - now I'm challenging you. Bill has asked anyone to email him and he will provide the details of the evening. Do this, verify the veracity (go look it up) of Bill's post and then post an apology to Bill and this group. If you don't, we'll know for sure, that you're a bigger ****** than can possibly be conveyed by your charmless, bone-headed posts. |
