I must confess I didn't type in my postcode as the ad implied that whatever
they had in mind wasn't up and runing yet, although I can't really see how a
service via the BT phone network is going to compere with a dedicated
broadband cable network.

Well it'll be down to the usual Broadband constraints I imagine.
Distance from the exchange, contention.....

I wonder how they do it if you already have Broadband?

Would you be your own downfall if you were, say, downloading video on
demand from BT?

And your Virgin service would then be crap? !

I've got the Virgin 'three for 30' which is cable, broadband and phone,
which I have to say I'm pretty pleased with, I've been a phone subscriber
since the days of United Artists and would never dream of going back to BT.
I've also known of one or two instances whereby for 'technical reasons' the
transition from the BT to the Virgin phone service doesn't always run quite
as smoothly as one would suspect it should!

I just typed in my postcode and instead saying cable *isnt* available
where i stay - they give some ******** about offering a standard
broadband account and what i presume is a standard freeview box .

I do actually stay in what VM no doubt class as a cabled area - but they
bypassed my street and never came back .

IMHO their plan is probably to suit a future tv advert where a map of
the uk will show 90% coverage when in actual fact and in real terms your
probably talking about 30% coverage as i've heard from other people also
say that ntl/virgin bypassed their street and never came back .

A friend of mine who's had cable for years has recently had a bungalow built
in his rather large garden (which he intends moving into and selling his
existing property) this has resulted in dozens of telephone calls and hours
spent on the phone, which still hasn't brought him any closer to being
connected to cable, AIUI something to do with the new postcode not being
recognized.. obviously 'The computer says no!'

Put my postcode in and get 'Great News You're in a cable area!' etc
but I'm not, because one, or more, of my five neighbours refused to
agree to the cable being routed along the common access when the cable
was installed 8/9 years ago. The nearest green box is probably less
than 100ft away from my house. I can see it from the front window.

I remember a tv advert for a mobile phone company that got slated a
couple of years ago because they said they had 90% uk coverage .

But , And heres the good part , Coverage actually means 90% of the
population and not 90% of the uk in terms of area mass .

It wouldnt surprise me if only cableing a couple of streets in a large
town would mean it can then be classed as a cabled area .

Christ, they still DO analogue cable? I know they're broadcasting the
analogue channels simulcast style, but surely they've upgraded just
about everywhere to digital cable, right?

MK is an odd one, I live near there when I'm not in Brum at uni (MK18,
not in MK though!). Some of my mates have that odd MK-only system where
a selection of channels are rebroadcast on a closed-loop UHF system
which terminates at aerial points in their houses, letting them tune to
some channels on a UHF carrier without Sky. Kinda handy, but shame it's
so proprietary (and probably far too expensive for what it offers).
