Channel Five DOG; The Reply

Here is the reply that Channel 5 have sent me regarding the DOG
**** they have placeed on my TV screen. As you can see they have not
addressed any issues which I brought up in my original complaint so I will
not be watching Channel 5 again.

Date: 24th October 2007

Dear Correspondent

Thank you for your recent e-mail regarding the re-introduction
of our DOG.

In an environment of up to 400 channels, we feel that it is
entirely appropriate to carry a DOG. The vast majority of channels carry
them, most permanently and virtually every channel at some point has one
during the day. 85% of households in the UK are watching digital TV and we
believe that the majority of this audience are extremely visually literate
and comfortable with the use of DOGs.

The logo is translucent white and unobtrusive; it will appear on
screen at all programming times except for during commercial and promotional
breaks.

Your comments about the re-introduction of our logo have been
noted in our Viewer Enquiries Report, which is circulated throughout the
company.

If there is anything further we can help you with, please do not
hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your interest in Five.

Yours sincerely

They may be working their was through the alphabet for the noms-de-plume
for the 'Viewer Advisor'. When they get to Zebedee, they will probably
go back to Aaron. Or maybe it's a random name generator?

Interesting as there are standard texts in that which I also had when
complaining about 5US and Life using the audio description channel for
normal sound and thus making it un listenable all the time unless you turned
AD off when there was no AD program running. They did not address the fact
that the two sound sources have a delay, and simply said something nebulous
about it needing time to set up, then put the paragraphs about circulated
etc, on the end as with yours.

Maybe you should write back to them pointing out that maybe they should
announce the channel every thirty seconds on the AD channel to allow those
with no sight to share in the irritation of channel id as lots of us are so
thick we cannot recall which number we keyed into the remote...:-)

That's an interesting take - people who don't like DOGs are "visually
illiterate".

I guess people who don't like graffiti must be visually illiterate too
- which is ironic, since most people who write graffiti are also
illiterate.

Cheers,
David.

I thought that was clever. Trying a bit of psycology I guess. They are
hoping people are going to think along the lines of
'Are they saying there's something wrong with me because I don't like DOGs?
I'm perfectly normal!
There's nothing wrong with me!
.... Maybe I must like DOGs then...'
