Channel Five DOG

Here is the complain I sent the Channel Five.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I wish to complain about the DOG or Digital Onscreen Graphic which has
recently appeared on all Channel Five programmes.

The DOG serves no purpose whatsoever during programmes except to annoy. I am
sick and tired of my intelligence being insulted by TV channels which use
DOGs claming that this is because of the multi-channel environment since I
can always use the Info button or EPG on my remote control to find out which
channel I am watching and this ability has been available on Teletext and
Digital enabled TVs for over an quarter of a century, therefore you have no
excuse for needing a DOG. Every time I change channels there is a huge
onscreen caption inserted by my STB telling me the name of the channel I
have tuned into. If the purpose of the DOG is about branding then why isn't
it being shown during commercial breaks and programme trailers for
programmes on other channels in the Five group, when it is more difficult to
identify the channel you are watching than during the actual programmes
which are distinctive to each channel and therefore need no reminders of
what channel they are on.

Unless the DOG is removed from Five, and the sooner the better, I will no
longer watch this channel anymore. Currently I refuse to even turn to FiveUS
or FiveLive because the DOGs are so huge, annoying and distracting that the
programmes on these channels are completely unwatchable.

If the people in your marketing and research departments do not realise that
DOGs put people of watching TV and lower the viewers perception and image of
your channels then they should be fired.

Would be even better if it said "put people *off* watching TV"

I'm not and I won't be while it continues to use a DOG.

Sounds like they may have worked for Virgin Media, they live in a world of
their own as well.

Are you being serious, are you that bothered by a logo?
Can't you cover it using a post it note, or something, on your screen!
Or stop looking at the idiot lantern so much.

It would be better for everyone if people like you used post it notes
to remind yourselves what channel you are watching. You could also use
post it notes to tell yourselves what is going to be on next, what
sort of programme you are watching, which websites you need to visit
for each programme you watch, what mobile number you need to use to
get text messages for those programmes, and what electronic items you
should buy from Sky. Then the rest of us can just watch the programmes
in peace, without the broadcasters thinking they need to communicate
with you and people like you.

As the DOG goes off during adverts, it's absence / presence can probably
be sensed, and used to do things like automatically pause a recorder
during the adverts (so they don't get recorded), or fast forward over
the adverts during a replay. Publicise the fact that this is being
widely done, and maybe the advertisers will put pressure on Channel 5 to
keep it off all the time.
