Afer all the hype and adverts about V1 being 'proper telly' they can't even
show programmes in the proper aspect ratio.

Two cracking good shows, didn't notice the 'aspect ratio' - whatever that
may be. ;-)

Very different cop show in "Criminal Minds" and superb performance by
Eddie Izzard in "The Riches".

As I've mentioned before, there seems to be no rhyme or reason behind the
choice of episode for "Criminal Minds". I can understand Virgin1 wanting to
start showing Season 3, as LivingTV is currently showing Season 1. However,
the episode that Virgin1 showed is Episode 3 of Season 2. Why jump straight
into the middle of a season?

Yes, I noticed that from Digiguide. Very odd.

Didn't realise it was on Living, though - although they are all part of
VMTV, of course.

Apparently they did it because S02E01 is a conclusion of last seasons
cliff-hanger - which they (Virgin1) have obviously not shown - and S02E02
deals with a child porn ring - which they felt was a little too downbeat for
a launch night schedule (regular serial murder is fine).

Reasons - if poor ones.

None of the flextech playback suites have widescreen. Living is getting it
early next year so Virgin1 should also go WS then.

C5 will start showing neighbours next year, I'm assuming they wont be
starting at episode 1 :)
Does Criminal Minds require the back plot to make it enjoyable? Is it
worthwhile starting with it now? Something like Silent Witness does not
really require any previous knowledge. The only back plot is Nikki &
whatshisface flirting over trays of brains and the "family" issues of
their boss Leo.

I wouldn't say so. I only started watching from the last half dozen
episodes of season 2 on Living and enjoyed it. I haven't noticed
anything really that's stood out as WTF? because of something that may
have happened in previous episodes, but then they may have gone
completely over my head anyway.

Now watching it from the start of S1 on Living and there's one or two
little things that I've noticed that have relevance to what happens
later, but nothing you *need* to know. They're all pretty much
standalone episodes anyway.

What requires a transmission suite to go widescreen, surely aspect ratio
conversion means there is more equipment in the transmission chain .

They do not crop WS to fullscreen on the fly, they order 4:3 copies from
their production companies or the yank studio they buy from

Seems daft that buying 4:3 material now and you may go widescreen in the
future you wouldn't be able to use those again ?? unless you wanted to
transmit it as a 4:3 picture in a 16:9 frame.

Well they buy the licence not the print. Not really like movie
distribution. So in future they could get the widescreen versions for a
nominal cost.

That said, plenty of WS channels transmit fullscreen stuff. Most viewers
only set their TV to stretch whatever is broadcast so a lot of them probably
do not even notice.

It seems that its easier to TX a 16:9 version. Take all the bull**** that
the Movie Companies came out with when Widescreen version VHS Tapes came in,
quote 'Its a different trickier process for widescreen film prints than it
is for 4:3 prints' unquote.

Yup its a hell of a lot easier for a widescreen print, its 1 pass per reel.
4:3 prints required the Telecine machnies to be programmed on pass 1 to do
all the Pan & Scan moves and then recorded to tape on pass 2. LOL

I laughed when I saw the poker on at about midnight ish a 16:9 LB picture in
a 4:3 Frame, so on my WS telly it was just a box with lots of lovely black
around it.

Sometimes they have really surreal storylines that are just done for a
laugh. Remember the plotlines from Janelle's novel which were acted out in
her imagination by people from Ramsey Street?

And then they spent a couple of episodes teasing us with the possibility of
a visit from Elle Macpherson. When it happened, it was simply an excuse to
turn a whole episode into an extended re-relling of the Tom Jones joke. LOL

That's only happened since she came back, Tessa James knows better.

One theory is that TPTB wanted her to seem more blind, even though the
character was not born that way, she lost her sight during puberty.

Going back to blind Anne, why is she always looking in a different
direction to everyone else? Okay, so she's blind, but any blind person
I've come across at least looks in my direction when we've had a
conversation.

That's only happened since she came back, Tessa James knows better.

One theory is that TPTB wanted her to seem more blind, even though the
character was not born that way, she lost her sight during puberty.

She should have some marijuana. Why, without it she could become even more
blinder! :)

C5 will start showing neighbours next year, I'm assuming they wont
be starting at episode 1 :)

Their contract starts at episode 5366, neatly following on from the
BBC.

With any gap inbetween, like C5 had to wait a whole year or so after
ITV?

The gap will be one weekend, which is why I wrote "neatly following on".

I've got to wait a whole weekend??!?!

(Do you know which weekend? :)

Rather appropriately, the Ides of March!

Sorry, what's that in English?

We won't know for sure until the summer holiday. :)

I'd love to know where this summer's gone...
