PLASMA is NOT green. They are power hogs and are destroying the
environment.

Compare the actual power consumption of a 768p plasma screen to a
similar sized LCD TV. Not from the spec sheet, but the actual power use.
The better plasmas from Pioneer and Panasonic are only a little higher
than the LCDs. The reason is that the power spec for a plasma in the
manual or spec sheet is the MAXIMUM power draw.

The power consumption of a plasma varies with the brightness of the
displayed scene. It peaks for all white scenes, goes way down for dark
scenes. The typical measured averaged power consumption of most plasmas
in real world conditions runs around 40 to 50% of the rated max. My
Panasonic TH-42PHD7UY draws 140 Watts on average, measured over a four
hour period. In comparison, my retired 12+ year old 27" Sony Triniton
CRT TV drew 90 Watts.

LCDs, well CCFL back light models, don't vary dynamically much because
they block the light from a constant back light. So their power
consumption depends in part on what brightness the back light is set to.
In general, they run at much closer to the rated power spec. So the
difference between a plasma and same sized LCD is not as much as you
might think. The 1080p plasmas, OTOH, do use more power because of the
extra pixels they drive. The power consumption for these is supposed to
be improved in future model years.

If you want to save the power taken up by a big screen TV, replace 3
or 4 75 to 100 Watt incandescent bulbs with 15 to 23 Watt CFLs. My house
is almost all CFLs, except for some ceiling lamps which are infrequently
used.

Ok, done with the long winded answer to what was probably a crank
posting...

And you didn't even get to a comparison of plasma versus the various
projection systems with their power-consuming lamps.

Wear green glasses.

Get a smaller screen.

Turn it off.

Plant a tree.

Install some solar cells.

Cut your driving about two miles a day.

Take cold showers.

Concerned about GREEN? When are we going to pull oil from all the
shale in Colorado? There is an equivalent, in excess of a trillion
barrels, nbrs that far exceed IRAQ, Saudia Ar, Kuwa, etc.....

Right now 80% is fed-owned property.

Think green? When is Al Gore going to give up his jet? So.... worry
about pwr consumption of a plasma???

B.S. Yes they use more power than LCD for the size but not that more. Much
better display tech for movement and viewing angles.

But I still haven't seen one smaller than 50 inches that meets even 720P
specs.

The Panasonic TH-42PZ700U is a 42" 1080p model. I saw it going for
less than $2K recently at a sale price at Best Buy. But at 42", 1080p
does not really do much at 8 to 10' from the screen. Go to a BB or CC,
stand 6, 8, 10 feet from the 1024x768 42" plasmas and the Panasonic
42PZ700 and see if you can see that much of a difference in detail for
true HD source material. We won't get them now but a 1366x768p 42"
plasma would do just fine.

I am still predicting cooling to start in 5 years!

In whatever time, WE have no control over it. Maybe accept the fact the
sun spots have considerable power of our environment.

BTW, notice how quiet the Libs are, in spite of noise from here and
there, given their poor showing - work ethic - in Congress? Where is
Pelosi (spelling?) these days? In Syria again? MoveOn.org has a
powerful clamp over Ms. Hillary - BTW, do we really want a third term??
Off the subject! Sorry!!

I wonder whether the next president (probably a "greenie" at least in
name) will give up that fuel-sucking 747-200. That is the most
arrogant, huge waste of carbon fuels around.

Al Gore supports stupidity. That's because he invented stupidity.

The liberals have that covered too. It's all part of global warming:
supposedly *some* places will cool down. So no matter what happens they
will be right. Clever? Desperate? You decide.

I am still waiting for "The Great Global Freeze of 2000", the one
predicted by the same kind of ecofreaks as we have today. A commie
organization called the "Club of Rome" ballyhooed some computer
predictions back in the 1970 which claimed The Great Freeze. Never
mind that the computer programs were found to be bug-ridden later.

An AGW moron claimed that the reason the Great Global Freeze did not
come is that Global Warming came along.

So you personally would prefer plasma over LCD for
general TV viewing?

Even in smaller sizes such as 32" and below?

Avoid broadcast TV... millions of coal-fired watts just tossed into space to
pollute the environment.

Valvejob, why not just weave yourself a hairshirt and eat berries and nuts?

I am talking about large TVs. I don't think there is a plasma below 40
inches or so.

Samsung, Panasonic, and several others use to offer a 37" plasma as
recently as 2 years ago. Panasonic was the last holdout in the consumer
end last year before they dropped the 37" plasma consumer line.
Panasonic still has a 37" commercial plasma, the TH-37PH10UK, for $1400
list (already down to $900 on-line I see). Many people have used the
Panasonic commercial models as a TV monitor for home use as the
commercial models have swappable component, DVI, HDMI port options.

Actually it's even better.
Gore buys carbon offsets from a company he himself owns.

What a deal!
