Shadowy picture from F2-FOX T
Hi,
All of a sudden I have a very faint shadowy picture from my Humax, the sound is OK though. I've checked RF cable, rebooted box and changed SCART in case a pin was damaged but all to no avail. The analogue picture on the Samsung LCD is fine. Is my Freeview box knackered?! Thanks for your help. Ruth |

Ruth Try one or two things as a test: 1)Plug another item, DVD or VCR into that socket on the tv to test it. 2)The Humax has a modulator so unplug the scart lead, choose a spare channel on the TV and tune it until you find the output from the Humax and see what the pic is like. (It is best to press "menu" on the Humax first so you recognise it when you find it. 3)Try taking the scart lead from the "VCR" socket on the Humax, rather than from the "TV" socket. (You will manually have to select AV1 or Ext 1 on the TV as there is no auto switching from the "VCR" socket.) 4)If the above (3) works, go into the Humax "Preferences" "AV Control" menu and set the output to CVBS rather than RGB and see what happens. **What make of TV do you have? |

Thanks very much for these suggestions, I'll go and try them now. The TV which is always connected to the Humax is a 19" Samsung LCD (2nd TV) Ruth |

I have not tried a different TV. Will do that along with other suggestions above. Many thanks Ruth |

Plugged in DVD player to Samsung TV and the picture is the same as with Humax. SCART socket must be knackered then? So I've tuned the Humax in on channel six on the TV and it's fine!! Great, thanks you've saved me spending another £60!!! Thanks to you both for taking the time to reply, much appreciated. Ruth |

Had an idea!!
I was called to a Samsung 19" that I had sold. It had gone very very dark. Almost no pic. It turned out that almost all picture menu settings had dropped to zero suddenly on their own. Resetting them solved it. NOW.....The larger Samsung LCD's and plasmas store different picture memory settings for tuner input and each other input (scart, component etc) If yours has dropped the settings for the scart input down to zero (or almost) and left the tuner settings normal, it would look as yours does. SO, plug the scart back in, get the bad pic back again and go to the menu and bring the contrast, brightness and colour settings back up if they have gone very low. |

Even if it's not, it's worth trying anyway, mentioning "fit for purpose" and making a loud fuss in the middle of the store (don't let them direct you to an office where they can ignore you without other customers seeing :-) ). If you Google this NG from a while back, you'll find references to court cases that have set the precedence that a TV should work for longer than a year to be deemed "fit for purpose". Your TV is broken and it's not your fault. If you get nowhere with the store, contact Samsung. Might be worth a quick Google to see whether you're not the only person with this problem. Umm, quick thought, haven't whacked the brightness or contrast up have you? Worth checking in case there is some oddity with the LCD that's only shown when using the SCART. Unlikely but worth a quick check. Paul DS. |

Well , you and Paul are dead right about the settings! The picture mode had reset itself to CUSTOM instead of STANDARD. What a mad telly!! It's never done that before. Anyway, I've learnt something in that the settings for external appliances can be different from those for the tuner. I always thought once you had set the TV brightness and so on, that was it for whatever you were watching. Thanks again! Ruth |

Don't have small children do you? It's amazing how adept they are at "finding" those strange features on modern equipment. Paul DS. |
