Yes this is true but they will lose a vast amount of existing customers who
will change over to Virgin because if you get the basic package with them you still get Setanta sports free... "tim" wrote in message ... Hi Does anyone think that Sky customers will get Setanta free like the Virgin customers are getting. Thanks from Eddie |

Don't you have to be on the top package with Virgin to get Setanta sports free? Most of the Sky subscribers who are paying a similar price are going to be on the top package, including Sky Sports where they'll still be getting more football. I believe Sky get first pick of the matches anyway, so Setanta are getting "second-rate" football anyway. -- Sean Black |

Setanta got the old Prem Plus package which was always very much the lesser games after the main Sunday 4pm pick, that's why they had to wait until after Sky had announced their TV games to pick theirs. It'd be interesting to see what sort of take up they're getting. Whilst it's probably a pretty decent deal if you've got no access at present to Premiership football, but if like me, you've already got Sky Sports and for the last few years have been getting Prem Plus for a pound a game, it's a crap deal (not to mention it won't be in HD either). Good excuse to go down the pub though, I suppose :-) -- Sean Black |

Looks like it's all going to end in tears then, well done to the EU :-) I don't know what they hoped to achieve by making the Premier League sell the rights the way they have. I know it was supposed to make it a better deal for the viewer, but I can't see how it has helped anyone. Sky viewers are now having to pay more to see the same amount of football as they did last year. The only way I can see it being better for the viewers is if the EU made them make the rights non-exclusive, so anyone could put on any games, so there'd at least be some proper competition, but I can't see any way to do that. -- Sean Black |

Sky viewers are now having to pay more to see the same amount of football as they did last year. They hoped a terrestrial channel would win some and they would be lauded for supplying free football to the nation. Only they could not stop pay channels from outbidding as that would be anti-competative - the very claim they leveled at the old method of bidding. The only way I can see it being better for the viewers is if the EU made them make the rights non-exclusive, so anyone could put on any games, so there'd at least be some proper competition, but I can't see any way to do that. -- The only way you could do that is if each club was allowed to negotiate it's own contracts. The big clubs would love this but the little clubs would always vote down any proposals - what with every channel wanting Man U vs. Liverpool and nobody wanting West Ham vs. Bolton (no offence). |

One in October, one In November, so there's no way I'm going to subscribe for two months just to watch two games. If it'd been the same as last season, and I'd got a Prem Plus season ticket, at a pound a game, I may have watched a few more, but at that price it really wouldn't bother me if I did or didn't. Even if these were still PPV on Sky and I bought the two Arsenal matches individually, it still "only" have cost me, I think, £8 each and they'd have been in HD too. Basically Virgin and Setanta have huge debts and it makes sense for them to work together in the hope of attracting more subscribers. So Virgin will be paying Setanta out of the basic fee in the hope this reduction in revenue will be offset by increased subscribers. Setanta are independent of SKY. They hire their sat tranponders direct from the sat owners and sell their channels direct to watchers. Setanta hoped the Sat watchers would be a cash cow as they are for SKY. |
