How do I adjust color, etc. for HDTV with DVD player?
I have a 2 year old Zenith HDTV. I just got a Samsung upconvert DVD
player and, of course, am trying to adjust everything to get the best picture quality. The DVD player, in setup mode, has a brightness setting, level 1 to 5, a contrast setting, level 1 to 5, and a color saturation setting, level 1 to 5. The TV has preset settings under the heading EZ Picture, which include, Digital, Video Game, Sports, Night Time, Normal and Movie. The Custom setting has contrast, brightness, color, tint, sharpness and temp (cool or warm). Anyway, if anyone here has any suggestions on how to adjust all of this to get the sharpest picture with the best color, I'd really appeciate it. Thanks in advance for any advice. JCRitchie |

Oh, I forgot to mention, I used the component input as my HDTV doesn't
have a HDMI input. Is there much difference in picture quality between the two? JCRitchie |

John,
One thing you might not expect is that due to legal requirements the upconversion to HD levels will not work on copy protected DVDs, you must have HDMI and a newer TV for that to function. JCRitchie You sure about that? I thought that was for HD DVD and BluRay. The OP has an upconvering DVD player. I don't expect he'd have an issue. GG |

GG Both HD DVD and Blue Ray have a "flag" provision that can disable the HD output to the component video connection (it becomes 480p). Nobody is doing this yet, but they can. Up converting has nothing to do with this, its a process to simulate a 1080I signal from a 480i standard DVD. However I am not aware of any "up converting" players that output the up converted signal from the component outputs - this feature only works through the hdmi connection. The latest OP player does not even have component outputs. |

GG There are a couple that will still upconvert over component. Oppo and NuoNeo are two that I know of that will do this, but most will only upscale via HDMI, the best over component for them is 480p. |

For my LG DN798, component output available is
1920x1080p 1920x1080i 1280x720p 720x480p 720x480i However "if the disc is copy protected, it will be displayed at the 480p resolution" I used component briefly while my HDMI cable was on order, It allowed me to use HD resolutions only on non-copy protected DVD, with Copy protected ones it allowed 720x480i and 720x480p Michael "L Alpert" wrote in message et... common_ wrote: G-squared wrote: On Jul 13, 6:22 am, "Michael Walraven" wrote: John, One thing you might not expect is that due to legal requirements the upconversion to HD levels will not work on copy protected DVDs, you must have HDMI and a newer TV for that to function. As long as the disc isn't encrypted.... http://www.oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd_spec.html I'm not sure if this one is still on the market.... http://www.projectorcentral.com/neodigit_hvd2085.htm But they seem to have a few newer models. Not sure if these will upconvert encrypted discs..... |
